Why do McDonalds and other fast food joints ask you to “pull forward?”

Was up in Westchester yesterday with my wife and we stopped at McDonalds. Wasn’t a complicated order. Just a McChicken, an order of Chicken McNuggets, and two drinks. Pay at the first window, go to the second window and get asked to pull ahead.
This isn’t the first time but I’m really starting to question it. Anyone else have this happens to them?
I thought it was supposed to be fast food. It’s not like the food that got brought out later was amazing restaurant quality.

Will gladly wait an extra 3-4 min for fresh fries than to be given the shite that’s been under the heating lamps for 30min

This happens a lot to me at Burger King. Management tracks the time cars are at the window. They will tell you to pull up even if no one is in line behind you.

Sort of.
There’s a sensor at the window that tracks the time a car sits there. They like to average a certain amount of time. They like to achieve their goal to have a car sitting at the window for a certain average time.

Agreed.
Restaurants whose employees don’t monkey around are the ones who get a lot of business. Also it’s funny that they do this and now want $15 an hour.

They're on a timer from when the order is placed until you move away from the window. The employees are jobbing the system to meet "the standard".

So upper management thinks they are doing their job.

Can’t remember the last time I ate at McDonald’s. Sounds like I’m not missing much.
