I've heard doctors say your waist should be half your height to be considered healthy size.
That is beyond stupid though I do like the idea of having a 37-38" waist as being fit at my height if I ever gain weight

These kind of gimmicks are for people who care more about buying the gadget, playing with it, and posting about it on fb, than actually losing weight.

Fit people count in miles. Fat people count in steps.

I'm all for people having healthier lifestyles, most of it is common sense though.
The folks that posted about health club amenities such as pools, saunas and indoor gyms have a very valid point. Personally, I don't want to drive somewhere to workout, but that's just me.

a lot of people are too distracted to work out at home, so working out at a gym allows them to focus on the task at hand

Im 6'2 and have a 36" waist, weight about 190. Im not fat either. On another note my wife wants one of these, she runs about 40 miles a week, does p90x3 and has a personal trainer 2x per week. Is this thing pretty accurate? How does it measure things like resistance training?

It doesn't. Your wife will be disappointed.

Secret to losing weight is eating less and moving more.
Bingo. Going on 40lbs here since the first of the year.

Because I don't need a little piece of technology to tell me if I've moved enough in a day. It's pretty obvious to me when I haven't run.

For me, it's about measurables and control.
I use the fitbit in conjunction with myfitnesspal which work together. I enter everything I eat and my primary excercise is walking/jogging. Based on the 3500 calorie per pound rule, I can calculate what it will take to lose, maintain, or gain weight.
Yeah, I'm a control freak but it's worked for me.

I have a fit bit that I wear. I'm thin but the only reason I wear it is because it's linked to my companies health plan website. I don't know how they calculate it but I got $200 in amazon gift cards over the past year for my "activity"
does the gp in your name refer to Georgia Pacific? i recall them having such a thing. i like it.

interesting how body structure affects weight. you've got a couple inches on me height wise and waist wise, but i weigh a couple pounds more. probably my curiously large noggin.

I didn't buy mine to post about it on fb. I use it with myfitness pal app to track calories I eat....my body media tracks how many calories I burn in a day,my sleep patterns, steps taken, etc.
It's not a gimmick if you actually use it. I also use it for my hikes to see how many steps I'm taking and calories burned with each hike.

because many fit people don't have to work at it.
If you are a good golfer you don't have to constantly look at the golf channel or read golf magazines for tips. Hacks have to work at it much more.
Same thing.

Prove it?
Your total body fat and overall level of fitness are not the best indicators of insulin sensitivity, your waist size is.
I wear a 34" jeans from American Eagle, 33" from dickie, 36" from Expres
Your total body fat and overall level of fitness are not the best indicators of insulin sensitivity, your waist size is.
quote:
Studies clearly show that measuring your waist size is one of the most powerful ways to predict your risk for diabetes.
Determining your waist size is easy. With a tape measure, figure the distance around the smallest area of your abdomen below your rib cage and above your belly button.
Overweight: between 36 and 40 inches
Obese: over 40 inches
quote:
Ideally, all should aim to keep their waist measurement less than half that of their height, found the scientists.
That means a 6ft (72 inch) tall man should aim to keep his waist less than 36 inches, while a 5ft 4in (64 inch) woman should keep hers under 32 inches.
quote:
Most guys have probably guessed that mainstream clothing companies are a little bit... generous with their measurements. But they probably haven't guessed how generous. The Dockers 36-inch waist? Actually 39.5 inches around. And they're not even the worst offenders.
quote:
Here are the actual measurements for alleged 36-inch pants taken by Sauer as he tried on men's casual dress pants:
H&M: 37"
Calvin Klein: 38.5"
Alfani: 38.5"
Gap: 39"
Haggar: 39"
Dockers: 39.5"
Old Navy: A whopping 41"

The fads exist because people are lazy and ignorant. People won't do their own homework and actually educate themselves on what their body needs. They just want to join the crowd and do what everyone else is doing, even more so with women.
Just go to the gym and observe. The elliptical is the biggest waste of time and the most used piece of equipment that exist. People like it because it's "low impact", which means it's easy. Look at the people using them, generally so far out of shape that it's disgusting.
These people think they are doing something and bragging how they did the elliptical for an hour yesterday.
Think about that, you did an hour of what you call running on an elliptical. You can't even run to your mailbox, but you can run for an hour on an elliptical. I don't know if these people are actually that stupid, or just in denial. They don't realize that the machine is carrying the momentum for them. Hell, you stop moving on the elliptical and it keeps on going. Why is that? Because it's a freaking momentum machine, that's it. Hell, you have to force it to stop so you can get off of it.
There are several different ways to lose weight, but the #1 is diet. You don't have to work out at all to lose weight, you just have to consume less calories than your body burns. If you want to eat more, offset it by working out or being active.
I lost 35lbs in 5 months, no joke. I did this with diet and lifting weights. When I lost that weight, not once did I do a single minute of cardio, because it's not nearly as effective as breaking down muscle tissue and going through 3 days of elevated protein synthesis to rebuild it.
Point being, people are too lazy to educate themselves, hence they follow the latest trends.
