I've been at the same gym for a number years and see tons of people come and go- the regulars and the "this time I'm gonna get in shape for reals" types. The really obese people invariably head straight to the weights and spend 60-90 minutes on bench press, curls, military press, etc.

I can appreciate their trying to at least do something about the problem but when you're 80-100 pounds overweight you need to be doing cardio. At this point, 20 minutes of jogging would be so much more beneficial than bench pressing and playing on their phones for an hour.

Someone help me understand the psychology behind this mindset. If you've got C cup man boobs, throwing a kettle bell isn't going to get rid of that. It's a treadmill and diet fix.

The easiest way to lower body fat percentage is to gain muscle. Paired with a good diet, most people are better off working out than doing cardio

Because it’s long and hard

That’s why you see so many women doing cardio almost exclusively.

Tell me you don’t know anything about fitness and weight loss without telling me you don’t know anything about fitness and weight loss.

going from sedentary to lifting is cardio, homie. It jacks up the heart rate and builds upper body muscle to burn fat.

I haven't been a gym rat in years but anyone that talks shite about overweight folks going to the gym and at least trying to better themselves is a sack of trash.

Those people should be encouraged no matter what. Those reps are better than nothing.

We workout at different places, because I see the real chonkers on the exercise bikes barely pedaling with zero resistance.

As long as people rerack their weights, clean their pools of sweat, and don't spend 20 minutes on a machine playing on their phones, IDGAF who/what they are.

Who goes to the gym and pays attention to other people’s workouts?

So weird.

Nothing is creepier than when you mistakenly lock eyes with someone who was staring at you as you’re working out.

You’re that guy

Years? The rest of your post says you know little about exercise and the effects on the body.

Except their pantry?

All kidding aside, to the OP, I see someone else said this already. When you're obese, lifting weights and doing compound movements helps to build muscle which burns that fat right off. Of course they have to adjust their foot intake and step away from the pantry as well.

I’m on the lookout for goobers who are filming themselves so I can avoid them.

You’re halfway correct. Diet is vitally important but cardio often times doesn’t aid in fat loss as much as people think. Muscle is very expensive metabolically. More muscle you have, the more calories are burned at a base metabolic rate (rest). You need calories and proteins however to build muscle so if you just cardio yourself to death, you’re wasting the supplies needed to build the lean mass that’ll boost that metabolism, resulting in a leaner and healthier figure. Cardio should be a portion of your health plan, but killing yourself on a treadmill for hours a day won’t necessarily get the results people want.
