And, oh by the way, it's State law.
That’s what I’m questioning. I think it’s time to change the law.

Alot of rural crossings are either dealing with obstructed views, don't have the flashing lights/barricades, or are on steep grades, etc.
Forcing the school buses to stop and verify there isn't a train coming doesn't seem that unreasonable.

I am old. I know I am dumb. The older one gets, the more they realize how dumb they are. In other words, we old farts realize there's so much left to learn before we kick the bucket.
But I swear, this has to be one of the dumbest questions I've ever seen asked on the OT.

The correct thing to do at any unlit crossing is stop and look. At my old subdivision there was a private crossing that had woods on both sides, driving up you could not see the tracks except the section directly in front of you until you got right on the tracks. A man was hit and killed. They added a stop sign and the Amtraks lay on the horn from a mile out since then.

Imagine getting a single Louisiana state legislator to vote in favor of this law much less propose a bill. Their sphincters are simply not loose enough.
Contact your state rep and start the campaign though. Go ahead.

Are they thinking the signals won’t work?

Maybe if he takes the crossing at speed those kids don’t get hit. Taking away all his momentum right before crossing seems like a dumb move also.
I take it you have never been on a school bus that has gone over a small bump or large pothole at full speed. That shite will lift everyone's asses out of their seats; and you want them to go over a railroad track "at speed". Kids will be hitting the damn roof

It’s usually law. And it’s not just propane trucks… I’m pretty sure it’s any vehicle carrying haz mat.
Correct, it's a DOT requirement that any truck carrying hazmat material come to a complete stop before crossing a railroad.
The only exception is when there's an "Exempt" sign when approaching the crossing. There's one of these on Hwy90 south of New Iberia but I still see trucks stopping, in a 65mph zone, even though they're not required. There's been a few serious accidents there because of it.

After working on trains for over 40 years, I can tell you that those automated gates and lights do not always work as intended. And the train crew does not know this in advance until someone reports it.

Over the years there have been several horrific school bus/train crashes. Safety laws, including having buses come to a full stop before crossing the tracks, have been enacted to keep similar tragedies from happening. It has become an ingrained habit now for bus drivers to stop at the tracks. I think that's a good thing.

Have you ever seen a bus come up to a railroad crossing, stop, open the door, and then “oh golly, here comes a train”?
No you haven’t. It doesn’t happen. It’s like fire extinguisher inspections. They’re just going through the motions.
Actually, yes. When I was riding the bus in middle school we came up to a track where the light wasn't functioning properly and the driver stopped when they opened the door and saw/heard the train coming.
You've found a really stupid hill to die on.

Allegedly.

Why do certain vehicles have "STAY BACK 200 FT" signs that cannot be read more than 25 ft away?
It’s all about insurance claims. If an object flys off of a vehicle and hits you they are liable.
It’s you’re staying back, an object falls off of a vehicle, bounces off the road hits you, it was now road debris. The person or company if front of you is not liable.
