I can only assume it’s so they don’t get hit by a train? If so, I can understand stopping at crossings with no signal (which are very rare) but stopping at a crossing with lights and a gate is just not keeping up with the times.

Are they thinking the signals won’t work? That’s like double checking the math your calculator puts out. It’s 2023 for crying out loud.

It’s time to cut them loose. We’ve been living in the past for too long. #freethebuses

How would your conscience feel if you had 30 kids get seriously hurt bc you didnt stop and make sure a train is not coming at a railroad intersection. You may gamble on your life, but I would never gamble on 30 kids…and its policy

I’ve never crossed a railroad track without stopping and just hoped I didn’t get hit by a train. I use my senses.

Why do certain vehicles have "STAY BACK 200 FT" signs that cannot be read more than 25 ft away?

In most states, its a law for school buses.

And opening the door allows them to hear the train (you know, using their senses ) if there's one coming since their side views are often obstructed by the size of the bus.

It’s usually law. And it’s not just propane trucks… I’m pretty sure it’s any vehicle carrying haz mat.

Have you ever seen a bus come up to a railroad crossing, stop, open the door, and then “oh golly, here comes a train”?

No you haven’t. It doesn’t happen. It’s like fire extinguisher inspections. They’re just going through the motions.

Big trucks take alot longer to cross. You can't just gas it and go, like a car. Plus, it's the law. You are supposed to stop, let down both windows, look, listen, then proceed.

So a bus driver is getting yelled at by 30 kids. He comes to a private, unlighted crossing on his new route. As you said unlighted crossings are rare, he's used to the 15 lit crossings he goes on every day and in the chaos he doesn't adequately assess and simply sees "no lights" and rolls on thru. And the kids are hit by an Amtrak.

Have you never seen school house rock? It is not just a bill, it is a law.

The irony is ironic.

Maybe if he takes the crossing at speed those kids don’t get hit. Taking away all his momentum right before crossing seems like a dumb move also.

Have you ever seen a car/vehicle/train wreck? Nobody in those vehicles survives & most of the bodies are just bits & pieces. Sorry if this inconveniences you. And, oh by the way, it's State law.
