Because the population of this country is getting dumber and dumber in a time when we should be getting smarter. It shocking how many folks believe everything they read, hear or see, as long as it fits their narrative.
We on a fast track to the movie Idiocrary.

The problem that a lot of people have isn't the theoretical notion of there being billionaires.
It's how these fortunes have been exploding exponentially since the 1980s as a direct drain on the middle class / working folks.
Many aspects of these fortunes are certainly being grown by investments that have a widespread economic benefit.
However, the reason many feel the current concentration of wealth is so unsustainable to an overall healthy economy is the percentage based on cheap overseas production, rampant big chains replacing independently owned businesses (which strip mines capital from local economies just like overseas production), consumer dept, private equity, health/insurance industry etc etc etc. . .
They are, of course, one in the same with government since they're the ones funding every one from the most Maga Republican to any even moderately centrist Liberal Democrats.
And any significant government policy has, for over 40 years, reflected that. The money trail usually reveals a design to increase the efficiency with which the ultra wealthy siphon every extra dime from the middle class.
And now we have a populist movement led by some of the historically biggest participants in what they pretend to fight.

I’ve thought a couple of times that if I had money to spare, I might buy billboard space along the interstates to broadcast to low info people.
Billionaires have a lot more money than I’ve ever dreamed of having. Their scope is way above billboards.

Here is Democrat leadership praying to the Fentanyl Lord, George Floyd.

What group cries the most about the rich?
Who’s complaining isn’t really relevant. OP asked why they have so much influence.
Rich people (right or left) have significant influence in the United States. It’s not exclusive to party. They regularly fill the pockets of politicians to influence legislature and policy.
Whether you think they should is a whole other discussion. There’s no denying that if you have the ability to fund lobbyists or are just able to be in the ear of a politician, you have significant influence over government.

When Republicans are in charge the wealthiest get their tax cuts, get to decrease worker benefits etc. . .
Then liberal democrats are in charge, so they allow "free cheese giveaways" for which they sell the government the cheese at a huge profit.
It's a widening gyre that for 40 years has seen little any real corrective policy.

The gold standard. He who has the gold sets the standards.

Looks like someone fell for the libtard socialism message
Corps are buying politicians, and politicians are buying corps. Just check out any politician on defense committees, they invest heavily in a company and shocker it gets a contract.
I think we have enough recent history to show that trickle down does not work as well as it could, and that corps need non-incestous oversight.

Because people are easily brainwashed by lies.

Because over the last 40 years we have seen a rapid monopolization and consolidation in most industries. Prior to that the feds recognized the dangers of such things happening. Wall Street essentially runs the country now

The more disposable income you have, the more you can support whatever your interests are, be it political, religious, or otherwise.
On an extremely smaller scale, I’m sure if everyone could they’d stroke a check to sponsor their kids sporting events or whatever the hell else if the cost was inconsequential to your income.

In talk but there's something telling me that putting the biggest billionaires profiting from the status quo in charge of fixing it may not work out for anyone except the biggest billionaires.
