re: Why did people in the 60-70s look like they were in their 40s in their 20s?

Rue McClanahan was 51 when she was in Golden Girls. The others were 60. The same age as Cindy Crawford and Elle McPherson. Over a decade younger than Christy Brinkley.. who still rocks a bikini and looks amazing.
My grandma, at my age, had white permed hair, a house dress and thick soled sneakers and this was the expectation.

This is true. There’s a picture floating around of someone I know. It was taken from a Mardi Gras float about 1975ish know this dude very well and he looked all of 40 in this picture but I know he was in his early 20’s. He’s in his late 60’s now and still looks similar.

Cigarettes and wars. They'll age you.

I actually read an article recently about this phenomenon. The theory is that the outdated fashion makes people seem older in retrospect.

Regular exercise has shown to slow down the aging process.

The clothes, hairstyles, mustaches, long sideburns...they all made people look older.
You can even see people in their 60's today who have longer hair, thinking it makes them look younger, but it has the opposite affect.

My personal theory backed up by zero science is that fewer people go outside, more people are content to be holed up in their climate-controlled habitats, we're literally refrigerating humans for freshness.

Watched a tonight show interview between Johnny Carson and Don Rickles a while back and both were mid 40's but both looked to be in their 60's. I do think lifestyles were different back then smoking , drinking, sun exposure , bad diets etc...

Wellness products (collagen in my coffee every morning)
Fillers/cosmetic surgery/hair transplants/veneers
Makeup Industrial Complex
Everyone smoked in the 60’s - 70’s.
For 100k any man or woman can look like they are in their 40’s while they are in their 70’s.
Now all these wealthy are doing EBOO treatments every 4 months as well.

You know, in my zero science mind, that kind of makes sense.

Fashion, hairstyles, hard lives, no filters and less access to the many beauty products available to us.

Spent more time outdoors, did more dangerous things (almost every kid broke a limb at some point) and matured faster than kids today.
Todays 25 year old is yesterdays 18 year old.

It's primarily smoking, especially smoking inside. That and being outside more and having the sun damage skin.
