When the people elect officials who are incompetent or corrupt or both, things fall apart and stay broken. New Orleans isn’t alone in that. Look at Jackson, MS for another great example.

Seems that big floods would happen once a decade or so like the 1978 flood and May 1995. Given the city is below sea level that was understandable. Lately it's been more frequent and with supposed increased pumping capacity. I no longer live there, is it incompetence of the pump operators? A couple weeks ago I read that two were broken.

Many streets flooded on Thursday, I've been in New Orleans at Courtyard during a downpour and couldn't make it to Urban South (I'm in a car) because of the water levels on the road

Getting water to flow uphill is a pretty expensive battle. How is the Water Board supposed to go on vacations if they have to pay for pumps and pipes?

Don’t quote me on exact numbers here and they may have changed in the last year.... but essentially in bar napkin math... the drains are supposed to get serviced 2x per year, roughly, for optimum results.
The city has 4(?) trucks that can perform clean outs. Each drain takes a while to finish. If doing the required maintenance on each drain with just 4 crews it was penciled in as like 20 years or something ridiculous to do a full rotation through the system.
That’s ignoring that the electrical systems totally antiquated.
And they are running out of funds.
So it bodes well for change.
