Apparently they spilt the original grocer in half after daddy died.

Safeway also maintains regional brands that they’ve taken over

Kroger = East of the Mississippi

I miss A&P.
Their real strength was in their butchers
They were really really good for a chain

Kroger is one of the Big 3. They aren't going away. Safeway is also Big 3.

Louisiana probably has more truly local grocers than many states, I think it has to do with our shitty roads and AG

We have Harris Teeter in the Carolinas (and Food Lion). Really nice stores. The nicest are nicknamed Taj MaTeeter.
Ohio has Meijer.

HEB > any grocery store in both quality and prices. Glad I live in Texas.

Georgia is mainly Kroger and Publix.
You do have Winn-Dixie in S.Georgia and Food Lion up in the mountains/Northern fringe of the state.
In Western PA Giant Eagle is the dominant chain.

Randall’s and Tom Thumb still around?
Kroger and Albertsons depending where you are?
Safeway? I don’t know how many names they have?

My theory at least regarding Brookshires is it’s run by the mafia because HEB won’t come into the Tyler/Longview market

HEB tried a Pantry store (smaller version) in Lake Charles on Nelson Road years ago but it failed. HEB is so successful because of their Texas-only distribution model. They aren’t going outside of Texas again. My wife worked there for a few years and loved it- they treat their employees very well.
EDIT- HEB does operate some stores in Mexico

The main problem with expansion is distribution centers and the problems with setting them up and then having the right amount of good store locations that feed off of the distribution center. In addition, you have to be willing to personalize the stores in order to cater to local tastes. Finally you have to assess how far most of your store brands have to travel in orderto stock those distribution centers and the effect on pricing in order to make that profit.
Blah, blah, blah. I still want one in Lafayette, rational thinking aside.

Why aren’t there more national grocery store chains?
Because

you have Walmart (which isn’t a true grocery),
Look into how they work and you'll understand.

Mostly logistical/distribution.
Same reason a lot of restaurant chains are regional only like In and Out.

Kroger bought Harris Teeter in the Carolinas a few years back as well. I hate the trend—we’re moving to monopolies in every business, knocking down every smaller business in the way.
