Question, do you believe in the concept of separation of Church and state?

How do YOU define this?

I’m fine with churches being tax exempt, but there’s a lot of dumb shite in this thread

Understood. I was just saying what I’d been once long ago when it came up in conversation.

Yes, and isn’t the state favoring the church by not requiring them to pay taxes? The ice cream shop or pizzeria or whatever that’s next door to the church has to pay taxes.

It's probably the way to get public funding for religious schools. You wouldn't be able to deny that funding if churches were paying taxes.

So, your saying the Church should have representation in government?

They just chose not to tax churches when writing the income tax code. It’s not that complicated. Your feigned intellectual superiority on your made up theory is noted though.

You're saying the federal government can continue to deny services to religious institutions even as they tax them as they would any other institution?

I do, but I also think it's bullshite that if a church catches on fire, the fire department (which the church doesn't pay for) will come put it out.

The last thing our government needs is more taxes

99% of churches have less than 75 members and can't pay a full time pastor. They would all close their doors instantly.

But sure. Tax them.

Oh and churches pay payroll tax and pastors income tax

edit: Non hyperbolic, it's legitimately close to 90% of churches are small and have very little income. The average church attendance in the US is around 65. and most pastors have 2 or 3 jobs

Taxes prevent tax payers from freely spending all their money on what they want and with various credits, deductions, and other stuff attempt to influence tax payer behavior. Taxes are also audited & enforced by political govt agencies, so I can only assume it was decided taxes could be used to de facto prohibit the free exercise of religion or used to unduly influence the free exercise of religion.

We don’t need more taxing, we need less spending.

Are dues not taxable to any other nonexempt entities?

Gifts are generally not taxed unless they are over a specific amount…

These threads are always full of whiny people who think contributing to charity is giving the tatted-up barista an ,extra buck.

They've never contributed any significant amount to help anyone, and they're to insecure to help anyone that does.
