re: Why are VCR’s making a come back?

It is simply a nostalgia thing.
I still hold onto a JVC HR-S8000U S-VHS VCR which is arguably the best consumer grade VCR ever made. The digital effects are kinda crazy. It can stop a frame but it isn't reading it off the tape that produces the wiggly frame it is digital so it is as solid as a modern DVR. I can do a stop motion which puts 16 frames in a row in the screen. Plus a ton of other stuff. I keep it running by playing a tape once or twice a month whether I watch it or not.
I keep it around because it is a cool bit of older tech and the apogee of VCRs it cost $1299 in 1990 at a time where you could get a cheap VCR for about $70.
I have it setup in the camp with a retro themed sound system with a refurbed Pioneer SX 3900 receiver, Nakamichi Dragon tape deck that was Hermann overhauled (worth about 5k these days) an Ontari MX5050 open reel deck an Linn LP12 turntable and a set of Klipsch Chorus IIs with upgraded Xovers. I plan to build a cabinet for the 60" Tv I have there to resemble an old console TV, I grabbed an old one from my moms house years ago before it was thrown out and plan to use the legs and the mount the channel changing dials and on/off volume switch to give it a vintage appearance.
I get a kick of of sitting in front of it and think about how much I would have loved this setup when I was a kid.
Somebody's stock picture of the VCR with the front panel down. Even that front panel is quality, you press a button and it very softly lays open.

As someone who remembers when VHS first hit the scene and remembers it being replaced by first DVD and then BluRay, I have to ask why anyone would want to go back to watching VHS.

Could be just people still having VHS collections needing a vcr that works.
Found this. VHS back in vogue NBCNews

In some cases, aficionados cherish tapes because they preserve what they consider superior versions of classic movies. The early VHS editions of the original "Star Wars" trilogy, for example, contain scenes that were excised or altered in later director's cuts and digital releases.

Laser Disc
There are a number of films where the laser disc version is the most sought after among collectors
For example, due to rights issues Hollywood, the great documentary series about silent movies by Kevin Brownlow, has never been released on DVD or BR, only VHS and laser disc.

It is niche but it is real. I just checked eBay and one of the VCRs like I have and a picture of above in working condition have been selling for $300-$500. There are always groups of people that are extremely nostalgic about entertainment from when they were younger, why would anyone play 8 bit games today?

The only way to watch old VCR tapes is a VCR player.
Wish I had one and an 8mm player as well.

Must be for content only available on VHS. Otherwise it is very obsolete, both technologically and also content wise -- motion pictures were presented in full screen ratio. You were missing like 30% of the picture.
When I got my first widescreen TV with a blu ray player back in 2008, I was seeing things in my favorite films I hadn't seen since seeing them in the theater years sometimes decades prior.
