You’re a math guy.

Could you compile some data from the last 10 years so that we can see how much time the average student in this state has lost because of storms and Mardi Gras and Christmas and Easter and spring break and Thanksgiving and Covid and just the average rain storm causing street flooding?

This post happens over and over again. The answer is always the same.

If they do something and nothing happens, then it is pretty much no harm no foul.

If they do nothing and bad shite happens, all we will hear is "WHY DIDN'T THEY DO SOMETHING!!!!!!!!!!"

We got cancelled ALL week. They should have said Mon/Tues and then Tues let us know about W-F. It was a knee jerk reaction to take off the whole damn week.

My point is you can still safely cancel in plenty of time in a place like EBR where an evac isn't going to happen. There was no reason to cancel an entire week as early as they did. We have examples of schools in the same area doing just that.

I'm not advocating that nothing happen. I'm saying the decision to cancel happens way too soon and you end up with days like today.

My son’s school was cancelled yesterday afternoon. That’s about as late as you can make decisions like that, and also allow families to make decisions about evacuation.

The fricking diocese cancelled the whole damn week before we really knew anything. It's a joke.

Which diocese? The only info I have heard from New Orleans diocese is Mon & Tues.

With modern day communication, there is no need to cancel school before Sunday at 5pm

Agree with this, but considering the forecasts yesterday afternoon they still would have cancelled them anyway.

Thanks for the correction. Typically the diocese has followed EBR. Bad assumption on my part.

In a normal year this is true because catholic schools use EBR’s buses. This year EBR is virtual right now while catholic schools are not so they aren’t on the same schedule so Catholics are free to make their own schedule.

I can understand both sides of the argument. I think that school closures should be tied to evacuation orders. If there are no evacuation orders, then there's no need to factor evacuation plans into a school closure. If conditions aren't expected to be bad for the next 12 hours, then keep school on.

I've been tracking the hourly forecast on the WAFB weather app for today over the last 24 hours. At no point in time were we projected to have winds over 14mph during the day. The worse I saw was at 11pm tonight for about 3 hours, the winds would be in the mid to upper 20s. Nothing over 30mph. If you trust the science behind that app, then no need to cancel school.

I'll give one school credit. Dunham has classes today. Email was sent at 2PM yesterday that classes would be held as normal because the timing made it obvious today would be fine. So it's not like this isn't doable for everyone else.
