Why are people on this forum so miserable?

Rarely will you see any compliments, encouragements or heartfelt sentiments. Are people on here generally unhappy or is an avenue to help vent some grievances without giving up your identity?

Dude. I had open heart surgery three months ago as of Tuesday. I freaking died three months ago the following Tuesday. And despite all that, last night I got to sit next to my loving wife of almost 20 years while we watched our beautiful 8 year old daughter win class beauty in her school pageant. I'm the happiest bastard here.

I think this is part of the answer. It's so weird to me that we live in such a great country, yet are some of the unhappiest people. We have everything we could ever want at our disposal, yet there's discontent in a majority.
