distributive property sets it at 16; PEMDAS has it at 1

This is "abstract". Math isn't supposed to be abstract.

It's written like shite to purposely confuse people.

If it's

8
-
2(2+2)

It's 1.

If it's

(8/2) * (2+2)

It's 16.

It’s a deceptive way to write it

8/2 is a fraction, not an operation

So this can be rewritten as 4(2+2)

Both give the answer of 16. In PEMDAS, multiplication and division are equal in the hierarchy. Which ever comes first is calculated first. In this case the division comes first.

You are thinking of "arithmatic".

Here you go. Knock yourself out.

PEMDAS isnt ranked from left to right.

It’s

P
E
MD
AS

in the event of the tie, do math left to right.

Correctly applying PEMDAS matches the distributive property

Math is entirely abstract. This isn't math; it's arithmetic.
