Why Are Old Ladies Putting Purple, Pink, Green etc Streaks In Their Hair?

I've begun noticing a trend of old ladies 60+ having purple, pink, blue, green etc streaks in their gray hair. Saw one yesterday with pink and blue streaks. Don't they realize they look ridiculous?
I get old ladies color their hair to hide gray, but choose a normal hair color. Here's an example:

As far as I can remember old ladies' hair has always been a shade of purple or blue, hence the term "blue hairs". So what if they are trying to keep it current. More things in this world to worry about then some old bag of bones' hair color.
