So why is student debt so special that it deserves being cancelled?
Because it isn't dischargeable with bankruptcy. That's what makes this dent different than others.

Because nothing is free, and theft is illegal, which is exactly what making someone else pay for something you received without paying for it is.
I’m not without understanding in deferring money owed to some degree until we have recovered from this mess, but to simply wipe the slate clean when you received an education for free is a complete injustice to those who funded it, and the rest of us who had to come out of pocket and pay for ours without any bail out.
How can you possibly see it any other way?

Nah just federally held student loans.
Not your private loans

Well, then no.

Why should we have to pay (in taxes) for you to get out of a loan you agreed to pay? Should I get mortgage forgiveness and not have to pay the remainder of my home loan?
And fwiw, my wife and I still have about 25k remaining on our student loans.

Well, I am one of the Boomers here and I don't want to pay for your education since I did not help you decide upon a major, I dd not have a say how you chose to live while in school, and I dd not see how hard you worked for that degree.
I graduated from SLU in four years with two degrees that I have used for 42 years. No debt. I lived in a dairy barn converted into an apartment, worked weekends waiting tables and weekdays for the university. I did not have a condo.
That's why I don't want to pay for your college experience.

Bc my wife and I both just finished paying ours off and even Though we both ended up in fields totally different than we got a degree in it was our responsibility to pay for it and I feel it’s complete bs some folks think others should pay for their bad decisions in a major that they chose that will never justify what college cost them.

Why not?
Why should student debt holders get a tax break compared to other debt holders?

Why ARE YOU A COMMUNIST?

Posted on 3/25/20 at 3:41 pm to JohnnyKilroy
Just asking, where do you think your student loan debt is held?

Poor form to answer a question with another question.
Make your argument.

I'm not for student loan forgiveness but i strongly believe that the interest rate should be 0-1%. Saddling today's youth with debt for 20 years is immoral. The politicians have created this mess, along with academia snobs, and this country's future is diminished by this rip off system. We should INVEST in education as an asset to our future national security. Maybe it's time to abolish the entire thing and go to full apprenticeship. Based on standardized exit test, companies can hire and PAY kids to learn !
I'm over 60 and would be glad to see the professors out of the business of indoctrination of communism.

I don't think any serious student loan forgiveness bill has been put forward.
I think the dems tried to cram in a 10k forgiveness into the 2 trillion dollar bill that Trump is about to sign but it didn't make it into the final bill.

Now, on the other hand, I don't agree with interest on student loans. If they are going to be federally backed and not discharged with bankruptcy, then they should be interest free.
I went to LSU for law school. Good credit back then, excellent credit now. My loans range from 5.5% to 7.65%. According to Fed Loan servicing, my average interest rate is 6.58%.

Tuition has gone up though because loans are so cheap. If we make them even cheaper, we’ll feed the inflation cycle even more.

College is an investment. If you decide to go to college and cant pay for it, student loans are a fantastic way to further your career. You get those loans with little to no background or credit and low interest rates.
That alone is a gift from the Federal govt who is investing in you... now you want them to forgive the debt for nothing?? It affects everything from the tax payer down to the quality of the education you are receiving.
The problem, as I see it, is that its too easy to get student loans. It should be much harder with a focus on what the market states your career will earn so that you can repay the investment.

Or route most kids not on scholarship to their local community college for 2 years.
Cut back on the requirements that have nothing to do with your field of study. A four year college is an expensive way to deliver history 1001 to an accounting student.
