I knew a backseater on a RA-5C Vigilante (old nuclear capable bomber, fitted for recce duty for carrier borne service). He was 6'5". The back seat of a Viggie was a spacious space...and he, being 6'5", had to crank the seat all the way to the floor. He told me he was scared if he ever had to eject...due to the distance between the canopy and the seat.

When he was doing NFO training, sitting in a Scooter (A-4 Skyhawk)...was very painful for him..

It's not a bad thing to be "short"....but I'd be willing to bet most are between 5'8" and 6'2". Average height.

For Mercury through Apollo, the height limit was 5'11" (I think), then 6'. Shepard and Glenn were both around 5'10" or 5'11" - as was Wally Schirra. I think the others were more in the 5'8" or 5'9" range, except for Gus.

Ed White and C.C. Williams were both ~6' and both about 180 pounds. They were the "giants" of the Gemini and Apollo programs. Along with Gus, Pete Conrad was pretty short, about 5'6". The crew of Apollo 13 were all relatively tall - Swigert and Lovell both about 5'11" and Haise a little under 5'10".

So their feet don't drag the ground on bombing runs.

What? My dad wanted to be in the air force. He was just over 5'11" and if I recall that was not tall enough to be a pilot in the AF.

You must not be recalling correctly. I grew up with a dude who flies F-15s and he's 5'-6".

It's the military, not a fricking carnival ride.

Unless it's the Navy, then it's exactly like a carnival ride of fricking.

I love that scene. That net is at roughly badminton net height.

And to answer the original question, I believe it's because most fighter pilots are Jewish. #truestory

my old boss was 6'4" and used to fly fighter jets. pretty sure all he did for fun was read manuals. he knew everything about anything...it was kinda ridiculous.

Couldn't they just get him a booster seat to sit on so he could see over the wheel? Or strap blocks to the bottom of his feet so they could reach the pedals?

Needless to say he chose to pilot choppers instead

Strange. Eject from one of those and your legs are the least of your concerns.
