I've seen military pilots that are 6'6" but never seen a pilot that is under 5'9".

Sit in any cockpit and get back to me.

Flying the bird-dog did he say that he was always turning/climbing/descending and never straight and level? I've always heard that if they were not changing direction they were worried about getting shot at by anyone on the ground.

Sure they are. Tom Cruise is like 5'6
OP title was changed. Originally just said "airplane pilots" and not "military pilots".

Navy Requirements:
A Navy pilot candidate must be at least 5 feet 2 inches tall and no taller than 6 feet 5 inches. A candidate must also not weigh more than 245 pounds or less than 103 pounds to qualify
Air Force Requirements:
Pilots have to meet the Air Force’s height, weight and physical conditioning requirements. They must be 64 to 77 inches tall when standing, and 34 to 40 inches tall when sitting. They must weigh 160 to 231 pounds, depending on height. Depending on age, men cannot have more than 20 to 24 percent body fat, while women cannot have more than 28 to 32 percent body fat.

As has been posted the height and weight requirements are more related to the proper operation of the ejection seat, and reducing the risk of injury than the size of the cockpit.

Pretty sure the only "combat" plane he could fit in was an A-10.
