re: Why are gym memberships so difficult to cancel? It’s all a big scam

I disputed the charge on the next auto draft month after the gym tried to do the same to me when I called to cancel after I moved out of state.
Said “they couldn’t do cancellations over the phone or by email I had to come in person, otherwise it was auto renewed” or something like that. Very predatory, never heard from them against after the dispute

I laughed and said I canceled the credit card and I’m out of the length of the contract, good luck to you.
I bet the contract renews month to month once the initial term is completed. You prob need to pull out your contract and see if it’s in there. If it is, then you are still under the contract. I bet the two weeks notice is in there too.

pretty common, canceled one and the goober said something similar regarding two weeks or some bs. maybe it has to do with billing cycle
It’s just snagging an extra months fee. I’m half surprised they didn’t hit him with a full year renewal.
That said, just don’t agree to places like this in the first place right?

I canceled my membership with Esporta (formerly LA Fitness) on Siegen lane earlier this year. They have a great app that links your membership so when you arrive it automatically checks you in. You can manage everything from the app, sign up for classes, etc, but when it comes time to cancel they either want you there in person or to type, print and mail a letter stating you want to cancel.
Absolutely absurd.

It is very difficult.
This last time I told them I got transfered for my job and had to move and the lady just canceled me without all the bs.

You should read a contract before you sign it. I guarantee your gym had you sign paperwork where you agreed to those cancellation terms when you joined. Just because you don’t like the process doesn’t make it a “scam” - you’re just not smart enough to think things through.
^^^^^^^ THIS.

A lot of gyms sell (factor) the contracts to finance companies, who are 3 steps lower than collection agencies. They don't care if you get mad at the gym, they are going to do the devious collection tricks (ding your credit report, sue in small claims court, etc.) that they can to get their money.

I paid more for my home gym than it would cost me to join somewhere but it's always open and I don't have to deal with this kind of nonsense.
Absolutely. The $2k I’ve put into my home gym was worth every penny. I could never go back to a regular gym. I do occasionally go to classes.

Dealt with this BS almost 2 years ago now. They hosed me out of a month's worth of membership fees after I cancelled literally to the letter of the contract. Had to cancel my card and then their billing department started hassling me. I finally told them I'm not fricking paying anything else and to have a nice day. Got a couple calls from out of state area codes that Google said were registered to debt collection agencies... but it's been over a year and I've got no hits on my credit, so I assume they just gave up. I have all my ducks in a row anyway if I need to contest anything.
Legally speaking, my former gym had no leg to stand on whatsoever, and from what I've gathered, this is the case with a lot of them. Their model wouldn't work if people were attentive, paid attention to detail, and knew their legal rights and their actual responsibilities. But America is full of ignorant, apathetic, scared people with money. You can literally run a business off of charging for a service people don't even actually use and forget about. What a country

I'm at my third jiu jitsu school due to moving a couple times. Has never been a problem. Might be specific to certain chain places like Gracie

We have a strong Y system in my city, rivals any gym. Was easy to cancel during COVID. We reupped afterwards. Our boys now go independently (they learned a good habit from their parents) and still only $73 for the family.

What memberships are NOT easy to cancel?
