Why are 911 dispatch people such jerks?

Watching 20/20 and this man found his wife dead. He wasn’t really freaking out, considering the situation, but the dispatcher was saying sir calm down. Sir if you don’t calm down I won’t be able to help you. It seems they are consistently dicks.

Owner of an auto repair shop sees an older black man across the street having a seizure. Calls 9-11 and the dispatcher wouldn't call an ambulance. "What's the man's name?" "I don't know him." Kept asking questions. He finally cut off the call, called the local Chief of Police on his cell phone, and got a quick response.

They get paid like $10/hr to answer calls about something bad happening, typically from the dregs of society.

In general whenever I get someone on the phone that has the black woman accent I know it is going to be a terrible experience and there is a better chance than not that I will accomplish nothing.

Once when I lived Uptown the house next to mine caught fire. Only about 10 feet separated the houses. My house was filling with smoke. The operator told me that I needed to calm down. I was like bitch I’m about to lose everything I ever worked for and you want me to be calm?

...I’ve had good and bad experiences with many perceived races/genders on the phone. This thread is weird. The operators want you to calm down so that they can get information.

Guy was having a stroke, and I put his wife on the phone. The dispatcher was rude as hell.
I call the non emergency line unless it's life or death now. Even if it's time critical. I get much better service

Yea I’m sure they do, but they need to realize people don’t call 911 when things are going well. They seem so inconvenienced

Probably because they have to deal with assholes who call them for stupid reasons like "McDonald's drive-thru is out of ketchup". 
I'm guessing they probably have a script to follow, which includes saying "Calm down" multiple times while they try to get info on the emergency.

911 dispatchers are trying to get credit for being first responders. It's a very annoying group

They do. I personally saw a guy call 911 because someone dented his fender backing up.

Probably. People who are emotionally excited tend to focus on things that don't necessarily help the first responsders.
