Chinese researchers used a genome editing technique called CRISPR to rid normal embryos of hereditary diseases that cause blood disorders and other ailments, according to New Scientist. Experts who reviewed the project told the publication that, even though it involved just six embryos, it carries promise.

In one case, the technique zapped a mutation that causes favism, a condition in which consumption of fava beans causes destruction of red blood cells.

In another case, it fixed a mutation that causes the blood disease beta-thalassemia, a group of inherited blood disorders that affect about one in every 100,000 people.

They got anything for hemorrhoids? I feel like I'm sitting on a bag of tangerines.

Awesome. Do they have a trade up program or should I just get rid of my non perfect children the old fashioned way?

Did they also zap flatulence, a condition in which consumption of beans causes one to pass wind?

I'm not ready for it, but we can't stop it either. Get on board or get left.

There is a great Radiolab podcast episode (I know, I know- NPR) on the possibilities of CRISPR. Disease as we know it now may be over. Some of it is kinda scary.

One of my buddies works with CRISPR. He thinks that we will see somatic modification in children and adults for things like hemophilia and sickle cell well before embryo modification is clinically approved. The reason being that editing the genome at such an early state leads to changes that can be passed down to the next generation, thus creating a greater risk. Not to mention potential ethical issues with non-disease related modifications.

I have some experience with CRISPR.

Basically when they started out they needed a perfect DNA strand to base off of. So naturally they used mine.
