Growing up in Bogalusa we not only had a party line, but we also did not have dial service. We'd pick up the phone and wait for an operator to say "number please."

ATT sure did a number on my parents generation and they hate having it pointed out to them. They are better trained than Pavlov's dogs over a bell ringing. Mom at 85 still can't ignore the phone to let the machines get it, even when the ID says "SPAM" in all caps.
And you think you’re immune? Everything thing you do on your phone goes through ATT cables still.

Had one with a good friend. We'd both call other friends. Good times.

Yep = our 'number' was 2 short rings.
On a line with 4 others (at least) - one old maid listened in on every call.
We moved to town and got a real phone with number dial = our number was 3367.

Grandmother had one.
Other grandparents lived in another state…when they called, operator would place the call, usually asking for my dad , Whoever answered the call would yell "LONG DISTANCE!!!!!!!!!!!" and the recipient would come running, since calls were charged by the minute…

Is this "hold on. someones calling on the other line"
That’s call waiting.
A party line is when multiple households share the same land based line.
You have your own phone number and a unique ring pattern.
Ours was 2 shorts and a long.

Raises hand. That was some weird stuff back then. Also you had to ask the operator to connect you to whomever you were calling.
No secrets back then. Somebody always knew.

I still vote along party lines.

We were on a 4 party line at one time. 2, 4, and 8 party lines were offered.

I remember them in the 60s as a kid. Not sure when we switched to single lines...
I still remember our phone number from back then... tho the area code changed at least once

My grandparents in the thriving metropolis of Blue Mountain, MS had one... two short rings... and if I'm not mis-remembering... actually had it until about 1983. My grandmother in Myrtle had one for a short while when she lived "in the country" but when she moved to "Myrtle proper" she got a regular phone line.
You'd pick up the phone and if you heard someone talking, you'd either hang it back up or... listen...

I remember you’d pick up the phone to call someone and you’d hear Estell Vines from up the road talking to Flossy Payne about how good her tomato plants were doing or something similar.
My Maw maw would beat your arse for listening.

Long Short Short
And it is rude to pickup and listen to the other people.

Never experienced that. Too poor.
We were poor and had a party line. I think you're confusing it with something else. A party line is a line shared by multiple homes. It would ring normal if someone was calling your home but would ring super fast if it was calling another home. We used to get bitched out by this older lady because I always answered the phone no matter how it rang.

Also you had to ask the operator to connect you to whomever you were calling.
We could dial straight out to anyone that wasn’t on the party line. We had 4 households on it, all relatives.
To dial a local call you only used the last number of prefix and then the 4 numbers.
So a local call was 5 digits long.

Thanks for the explanation. I am 35 years old and have never heard of this.
ETA- After thinking about it for a minute, I’ve got some questions. Could only one person use it at a time? Did you have to dial out? How did you call the other houses on the shared line? How was billing handled?
