Ran over to Thibodaux yesterday and the sugar cane fields never end. Pretty cool area tbh.
Is all of that a coop of some kind or does an OT balla own all of it?

I’m sure there are a number of larger land owners but as far as I know, mostly a bunch of smaller lots and old family land passed through the generations.

The land you can see from Hwy 90 in Raceland was most recently owned by Prudential Life Insurance- not 100%, but they may have divested that to MA Patout & Sons who own the Raceland mill.
For the most part, all the cane land in LA is owned by old families and rented out to sugarcane farmers for a percentage of the crop. The mill gets a percent, the landowner gets a percent, and the farmer keeps the rest.
Over the last few years, some farmers have been able to buy some land for themselves, but it is a VERY small percentage of their total acreage- like 100-500 acres out of 4000 acres total farmed.

What’ll get you is that the person who owns it may not farm it.

I had family in that area, that sold their sugar cane land long ago.
They lived well.

JBLevert Land Co has 12,500 acres. If you are talking about the fields along 311 from 90 to Thibodaux and up Hwy 24 from Schriever to the back of Nicholls the Giardinas and Ronald Adams own most of it. ( former Rebecca Plantation ).

My family owns a large portion. My great grandpa bought as much as he could back in the day. Whoever farms it just sends in a check of whatever every now and then. I don't think it's very much though.

If your family owns a large portion, I doubt the farmers just send a small check every now and then.

A lot of it in Raceland is owned by the Sugarmill which is owned by Prudential Life Insurance.

The Levert Family has an ungodly amount of land in Louisiana. They control several thousand acres in St. Martin Parish as well.

Some cane is better than others.

Caldwell Sugars Co-op owned a large section on the northeast side off Hwy 308. It closed in 2002, not sure who owns it now.
All of the land around Thibodaux is or was owned by a few large landowners, originally sugar plantations. There is only one sugar mill left in the area, Lafourche Sugars on Leighton Plantation, northwest of town.

Couldn’t imagine living down in that part of the world when the mills are running, smells awful
