Can’t remember…. I was 19 and the DD. Made it back to the barracks safe and with the transmission intact.

Leaned in my brothers 3 speed Pontiac Le Mans. There's an intersection her that used to be called 4 corners. Where Hwy 171 and Hwy 8 meet. On Hwy 8 heading east, the intersection has a steep grade. Interesting to hold the brake and then letting off the clutch without it jumping or rolling backwards into another vehicle.

I learned in a U=Haul truck moving to BR. I remember my aunt asking me as I was pulling out....."You know how to drive a standard?" I said, "No mam, not yet, but I will really soon!" It didn't take long.

Same. My dad called it a "3 on 3." I had to practically stand up in my seat to mash the clutch down to shift it.

This was part of the training and "final exam" when I took drivers ed. A lot of people struggled with it.

VW Beetle and an early 1970’s work van with three on the column and about 100 degrees play in the steering. I was 12 when I started in the VW; first trip was over the Huey P Long Bridge, and man, that was scary! I was 14 when I started driving the plumbing van.

Learned to drive in about 1948 in dad's truck. He would let me drive it back and forth to Leesville. Was about 1950 until he'd let me drive it into town.

But I actually learned to drive on an old Ford tractor a year or so earlier.

First auto transmission was 1972 Pontiac.

My first 3 cars were standard. Hated stopping uphill at a light or RR crossing. You had to have feet talent to pull that off.

I learned in a 1982 Chevrolet Chevette. My parents were so cheap not only did it have a manual transmission, it also only had AM radio.
