You don’t have to like him, but The Duke was a working actor for 50 straight years, and in over 180 movies. There simply isn’t a bigger Hollywood star than John Wayne. There’s a lot I like as much or more than him, and others I think were better actors, but as far as who’s the biggest star of the 20th century ,it seems pretty obvious.

It's probably close between Elvis, Ali and Sinatra. Jordan is probably the first outside those three (ETA: And now that I see it, yeah, The Duke is probably right there with Jordan).

If it is "group", its definitely the Beatles, but without any of their four, they're way behind the 5 I listed, IMHO.

Take all the people who have lived since 1900 and ask them to vote on biggest star of the 20th century that they had been aware of during their lives. Elvis would get more votes than Michael Jackson. You still had people claiming Elvis was alive until the end of the century. MJ had the benefit of better technology for his exposure. But Elvis was still famous for the longer part of it.

Michael Jackson is the correct answer. We would have also accepted Elvis Presley.

Michael Jackson put Jordan's fame to shame worldwide.

Music has far more global appeal than basketball.

Slum kids in India wanted to dance like Jackson.

Stan Lee. His movies outgrossed the next guy on the list by 3 billion bucks with 90 fewer movies.

EDIT: Nevermind. You didn't say 21st century. I'mma leave that nugget up there, though.

Michael Jackason made people lose their shite on each and every continent. He benefited from technology but nobody had a run of fame as long and powerful as he did.

Elvis

He could live in the black world or the white world at that time, everyone loved him and his influence spanned the rest of the century, plus the beginning of this one. All over the world, people still love Elvis.
