Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if people hadn't pulled their kids out of public schools when integration hit. It seems like a lot of people kind of ceded the public schools to the "ghetto" kids as you call them.
They would be better but find me any parents that would be willing to experiment with their kids over just moving to the burbs or putting them in private school.
St George might actually be an opportunity to give people a reason to move back to the area. I live about 1/2 mile inside of the city and still hope it passes.

U.S. District Judge John V Parker is solely responsible for St George.

How long has it been since they ended the busing ?
Have any of the st george public schools improved in that time? If not, why do you think that is? Do they have poor facilities?
How long should ebr schoolboard be given to prove that they cannot improve these schools?
How long did it take for central schools to show improvement after they gained control of the circus?

How involved in the SG public schools are the SG citizens? If not, why not?
Why should they be given control of a system they don't support now or cared about enough to support?

One of, if not the main, organizer of SG volunteered/coached at SEBR schools for decades. He was behind the original push for an ISD. Most of the volunteers for SG I worked with were parents, involved in their local schools, who wanted change.

Part of the problem wasn’t the kids being bussed in, it was that kids were being bussed out as well.
My parents were looking at registering my older sister for kindergarten in the public schools back when all of this started. Instead of being in a neighborhood school she would have been bussed to the ghetto close to Louise St, halfway across town.
Having to get up at the arse crack of dawn to be bussed to a shitty school in a dangerous neighborhood was a non-starter, so they looked into the school at the church as an option.
People could possibly deal with a deseg plan in a rational manner but the choices made in its implementation sped up “white flight” because the amount of headache involved wasn’t worth it. That is on Judge Parker.

Anytime your kid has to get on a bus, ride to a "transfer station" and take another 25/30 min bus ride every day to and from school as an elementary student, you know you have a fricked up public school system.
I got out of school at 3:15 and wouldn't get home till 4:15-4:25

All very good questions.
But no one wants to discuss these.
Deseg case was settled in 2003.
I think the facilities have improved, and facilities in SG although scarce are good.
I'm ready to make a call now, I haven't seen much improvement overall with the exception of a commitment to excellence for the Magnet Schools.
I can't speak for Central, but I believe their scores have risen from what I've seen reported. You also need to consider the plight of Baker and Zachary as well.

Zachary and Central have flourished since splitting off.
Baker is as bad as EBRPSS or worse, test wise. I chalk at least part of that up to an exodus from Baker to Zachary and Central, as no one will stay in a failing system when the best ones in the state are just a short drive away.
You could probably do a lot of analysis on why Baker failed but at least part of it was that they missed their window. They tried for years to split off and were constantly blocked, only succeeding after demographics and the local economy started turning against them.

Zachary and Central public schools are a big part of why Redemptorist and St Louis King of France struggled and eventually closed down.
Taxpayers have trouble justifying the costs of a relatively standard private school when the public schools are very good.
If I could, I would split EBR Schools into 3-4 ISDs.

They are trying to use the magnet schools as a bargaining chip.
Their magnet program is legitimately excellent. They aren't going to throw the baby out with the bath water just to spite people.

And it is working. Many in SG who have kids in Magnet Schools want the status quo, and honestly I can't blame them. They are getting an excellent education as things now stand.
Just now some are starting to ask questions. Why did BRHS and Lee High get so much construction money and McKinley HS is being told they get less?
It's an interesting situation. They'll tell you we are better together, but they separate the kids to a large degree with their magnet and gifted schools.

I graduated from Central and it was better than most BR public schools in the mid to late 90s. We didn't have as much busing as some other schools (possibly due to being out in the burbs). I'd say maybe 10-15% of the school population was from outside of Central in 1995/1996. It has steadily improved since they incorporated though. I wouldn't have an issue sending my daughter to public school if we still lived out there.

While magnets and gifted programs work, they do so by cannibalizing the schools these kids would otherwise attend.
Hard to make chicken salad out of chicken shite.
Not that this excuses other failures of various schools, the EBRPSB, etc, but Lee, Scotlandville, and BRMHS are definitely succeeding at the expense of the remaining non-magnet publics.

I wonder how many of the magnet school parents would put their kids in private school or move to the burbs if the program wasn't available? I'd guess quite a few.

Is it?
I'm not saying that BRHS or Lee are bad schools; they are very good schools. But compared to other magnet systems in similarly situated cities, is EBR's magnet system any better?
Because BRHS is not better than Ben Franklin. I'm not sure it's better than Caddo Parish Magnet.

Yep - a few years ago they wanted to bus my son to Broadmoor Elementary when we lived a mile from Shenandoah Elem.
