Yep. I played against them during the time they switched from Green and White to the Denver Broncos colors.

That old school Bengals helmet is badass. Love the awards decal on the front. We would get a star for offense and the skull and crossbones for something on defense.

How times have changed.
When I was in 3rd grade, me and my cousin were very eager start playing organized football. Our Catholic school didn’t start football until 4th grade and we wanted to start a year earlier than that. Just couldn’t wait.
So we heard about a BREC league from a friend. We asked our parents if we could join and they were not too thrilled. It would mean driving us to practice and games, and even with car pooling, it was going to be a hassle for them.
The instructions were for the players to show up at the first practice with a helmet. The only helmets we had were Hutch helmets. We didn’t know that they weren’t real helmets and were only “toy helmets” for kids.
My mom dropped us off at Olympia Park, outside of the stadium and left to go shopping or something. Did I mention we were in 3rd grade?
My cousin and I saw the other boys carrying real helmets and we were embarrassed and scared. So we never went into the stadium with the other boys. We just hung out in Olympia Park for 3 hours until his mom came to pick us up.
She asked us how it went, and we just said we didn’t like it and didn’t want to go back. No questions were asked. It was just a relief for them that they didn’t need to bring us anymore.
Can anyone today picture dropping off your 3rd grade son at a park with strangers, no cell phone and no money, and without talking to the coach or anything.
This was about 1977.

Played for the broncos. Green and white days to the days we combined with the bengals and went blue and orange. I remember the pirates were horrible and when we made it to the champ game it would be against the Rams from the other side of town.

Damn that sounds familiar. Third grade and we lived on Marilyn Drive. I rode my bike to Broadmoor High for our first practice wearing my LSU hutch helmet and hutch shoulder pads and blue jeans. I was embarrassed as hell when I saw all the kids in full pads. My Dad was running late and showed up halfway thru practice. I caught one of my first in public arse whippings from him when I bitched him out in the parking lot after that practice for not having bought me a "real" helmet.
He felt bad about it, and we went straight to the Athletic House on Tom Drive for new equipment. I thought I was in heaven.
