They say the 1983 Christmas shopping season was the origin story of Black Friday. Did any of you participate in this shopping craze?

I shopped after Thanksgiving that year but didn't notice anything unusual.

I member. I also member my mom buying my sisters the knock off Cabbage Patch dolls hoping the wouldn't notice. That went over like a turd in a punch bowl.

I was 17, yes I remember it but it was sensationalized. Black Friday was Black Friday long before 1983. Black Friday was a bigger deal back then, before Amazon and Black Friday deals starting before Thanksgiving. Back then, most folks had much less disposable income and no credit cards, so women would save all year to do some serious shopping on Black Friday. It was a true event.

I was 5 but didn't have any sisters so the only thing I remember about them is that every girl seemed to have one.

I remember my mom trying to find a couple for my sister's two girls. I think she wound up finding them somewhere out of town but I don't remember where. That was definitely one of the hot items that year

I witnessed it first hand.

Was at Lake Forest Mall before opening standing outside DH Holmes on the mall entrance side. There was a crowd impatiently waiting. Men and women.

The doors opened and there was a mad dash for the escalators, as the Cabbage Patch Kids were on the 2nd floor.

The stampede was so violent, 2 women got trampled on the escalator and needed medical attention (bleeding and broken bones) and the stampede broke the escalator. Men and women fighting and wrestling, grabbing at boxes. It was wild. All for a stupid doll that was the must have gift.

I’m sure there is a fascinating case study on human psychology surrounding this craze.

That video didn’t show riots, it showed polite well spoken Americans waiting patiently in a line to purchase an item. Got any footage of these supposed riots?

I remember the carrying on, but was a few years too old to want one. My parents expressed their great relief and happily bought me Calvin Klein jeans and a Duran Duran album for Christmas instead.

My dad happened to be at either a Wilson’s or a Service Merchandise when he heard the workers say they were about to put some out so he headed over to the toys and grabbed one. Don’t think they even hit the shelves but the guy opening the box just handed them out. It wasn’t a mob scene or anything. I was 13 and too old for dolls but he was so proud to have it under the tree for me I acted like I was thrilled.

I remember my sister really wanting one but we were some brokeass white trash so mom used old pantyhose and made her one. It was quite hysterical and tragic.

Yeah, it was a thing, but I was in HS, and so it wasn’t on my radar.
