My low point financially was when I moved to BTR in 1985 for LSU. Spent all my money on tuition, rent, and a car to get around with.
Was a tough couple of months eating lots of potato’s and PBnJs. Then the sales commission checks from selling computers at Tandy Biz Products started rolling in and I was back in high cotton. From that point forward life for me changed completely.
I flash back to those days of struggling when I ever use an ATM and it asks if you want to see a balance. Money ain’t everything, but it sure beats the alternative.

I’ve been down to my last few bucks and had to pay to the cent for a couple of triple layer burritos at Taco Bell but was always a few days away from being above water

In college, working at Izzos. Earned barely enough just to afford my gas to and from school and work. Once day I didn’t even have the money for an employee discounted burrito (like $3.50 at the time). Feelsbadman.
More recently I had to move unexpectedly across the country. Housing is far more expensive and rent was more than double my mortgage and it took 9 months for my house in Baton Rouge to sell, effectively tripling my housing costs during that time. My wife had been struggling with some health issues for a couple years prior, causing a strain on savings before any of that happened. That was the closest I’d come since the burrito incident, but somehow I made it.

Which time ?
We used the ATM on campus cause it has bills smaller than a $20.
Our friends mom worked at Wachovia and would refund all our overdraft charges from the bar.
I’ve been broke many times, it builds character, go hang out with someone who’s never been broke, they don’t have a clue what the real world is like.
My parents wouldn’t let me totally rot hut they wanted me to feel the heat and I’m glad they did.
Now owning and building businesses I’ve had plenty of times where on paper it says I’m wealthier than ever, had the best year of my life building net worth but at the same time be cash poor and feeling the fire under my arse every day. I’m glad my parents didn’t insulate me from that stress and pressure when i was younger.

Not totally broke, but got down to $500 to my name in 2014 with rent/bills due while my car engine burned up on the Causeway Bridge during rush-hour, on my way to put in a job application. I've never felt so vunerable.
I promised I'd never watch my savings whittle down that low again, if only not to ever burden my caring parents/sibling (car/rent/food loans) due to my assinine decision to job procrastinate. Got a job, repaid loans, got a new ride and have been breaking personal savings records with each paycheck for the past 10 years.

What's this like? Do you care? Feel any responsibility? Feel any relation at all like an actual father to him?

In college, I'd steal drinks off the bar at Bogie's when everyone at bar's head was turned talking to someone at the end of month because that's when I'd have single or double digit bank balance.
