Never been fired or laid off. I've quit probably 10 jobs though. A job doesn't look out for you, YOU look out for you. If a better opportunity presents itself, you take it. Employers don't like that but are they always going to cough up more money to keep you? They seldom do.

I got “displaced” last June. My group had a bunch of younger folks that all still had kids in school, so I told my boss that if he needed to let someone go, with severance, I’d take the hit. I’m actually still on severance, got 10 months of it. Went ahead and retired, don’t see any use in working anymore, i retired from the Air Force 16 years ago and after working in the private sector for that long and being 55 years old, I didn’t wanna go looking for a job. Glad to say my finances have worked out and I should never have to go back to work. Wife and I bought an Airstream a few years back, now we just travel for a month or two at a time. Loving it.

Got fired as a 17 year old greenskeeper at a golf course, where I had worked for a couple years. The job paid like shite and the owner was basically Kevin Spacey in Horrible Bosses, the biggest a-hole you'd ever meet.

One day I go in at about 5am to get the course/greens ready because we're having a tournament that day, and the parking lot gates are closed and locked. The clubhouse is dark and no cars in the parking lot (normally the clubhouse manager would've been there at least an hour before me). I figured he was just running late, so me and the other greenskeepers along with the cart boy hung out for at least an hour waiting.

Finally, one of us gets ahold of the course manager who had just woken up and he says "haven't y'all heard? We're closed down for good. We're all unemployed." No warning, no signs that things were going downhill, nothing.

Turns out the owner of the course had been arrested in a huge takedown the night before at his mansion. He had several hundred thousand in unpaid taxes and had been actively taking part in tax evasion for years. He even went so far as to "slightly mess up" every single one of our names on our paystubs, thinking that would help obscure what he was doing if these checks were going to people that technically didn't exist. For example, my friend's name was Tyler Hanson and his checks were all made out to "Tyler Hanton" - and that was the case with every single one of us that worked there.

The dickhead owner ended up being all over the news and going to prison for several years. Couldn't have happened to a shittier boss and person

Got canned in 2008 when the shite hit the fan. It sucked but turned out to be a blessing in the long run.

Took a shitty job in college while I took a semester off. Put in a two weeks at exactly 379 days after vacation and was begged to stay.

4 days into the boss acting like a petulant child, he wanted to talk in the back of the building.

He said I was being cranky. I said he was being a count.

He said I was fired.

I went back with the sole intention of quitting and filing unemployment just to be a dick. Spent a few weeks partying and went back to school.

Once. Because I was a lazy, entitled little shite at 16. I learned really quick how not to be because my dad got me that job and he took it out on my arse. The next summer I spent in south LA laying wood on drilling rig roads. I promised I’d never do that shite again.

Closest to being fired was when my organization was purchased by another organization. I was hired on by the new org with no break in employment though.
