I usually just drink beers and talk to strangers. If you let people tell you about themselves, you'll find out more than you ever wanted to know, bartenders included.

I've done it many times. The Key is to not leave alone.

Out of town for work traveling is about the only way I do.

When you go to a bar alone, you sit in the middle of the bar. Don't ever sit on the end, you need sit in the middle. Strike a conversation with the bartender. This is important. Listen to him/her talk with others and pick up on a topic of interest if you're not getting a quick entry for conversation.

When women see the bartender being cool with you, it is an indication that you have been vetted.

When you approach a woman, you pay compliment to an accessory she is wearing. Even if she thinks you're ugly, this buys you the courtesy of a few minutes to leverage your big old mass of charm. Watch, bracelet, necklace, earrings, and clothes; as long as it is materialistic, it will do.

I've done it before, when you're tired and don't feel like gathering ppl up but you still want to get some air. Did it a few times after going through weeks of studying. Fwiw, I met up with people later that need.
