I've had several mallards over the years. They're good pets.

Even had one that laid eggs we had probably 5 ducklings.

Then my shite for brains dog killed them.
I was pissed.

You didn’t ask me, but I’ll answer bc I don’t have anything else to do. Ours are free to fly away if they please and some do. If you get them as day old hatchlings (i order them from California) then raise them until they can fly then they are more likely to stay. Mallards are all we have raised. Geese are too mean. Wood ducks are too shy. Though we have full boxes around our pond. But the mallards..I put them in a coup until they outgrow it. I have released them too early and they will fall prey to hawks, coyotes, bass, whatever. If you keep them until they can fly you will have more success. A coup would be too small they’d need a pen from about 6 weeks until 16 weeks. They are terrible natural mothers. We’ll get eggs in our flower beds and the mother will realize it’s too high traffic and abandon. She won’t sit on them enough. She will sit too much. She’ll lay on the driveway. Our labradors have brought us sitting hens. Unharmed, but pissed and traumatized. My neighbors dog (My dogs have soft mouths and know better) has killed sitting hens and one of our drakes can’t fly so he runs everywhere. Surprised he’s made it all these years. It makes it fun that our neighbors have a separate pond. So when they are pressured from him mowing or whatever they fly over. It’s always beautiful and we almost always stop to watch. They do this all day at this time of year. They have cliques and groups and some prefer our pond to his. Thankfully they stay off of the porches bc I don’t want to clean duck shite. We’ve tried incubating and hatching, but mallards are hard. I think humidity in the incubator is a factor. We got maybe 5 out of 18 eggs to hatch. It’s easier to just order. I’ve never received a dead hatchling. Anyhow, that’s my experience with them. I enjoy having them as mature ducks, but it’s hard to get them there and breeding season is risky for the hens. Check out metzer farms if you’re interested. Oh and we feed a lot of hen scratch and they love eating fish food pellets.

Buy one of those plastic children's pools and burry it into the ground.
You can buy feed for them. Usually they'll eat bugs they find in the yard.
