Braids these days are synthetic or human hair that's bought and then braided into your own hair. Usually it's Malaysian, Indian or some other Asian. I would imagine that white people would use some synthetic hair that is a little kinky and would allow it to stay together and not come loose immediately. That's my guess.

Huh? Braids have likely been around for most of human history. Human history started in Africa.

A braid is when you interlace 3 strands of hair to form a neat-like design. There are different styles of braids but synthetic hair has nothing to do with an actual braid. You can use real hair, fake hair, string, silk, cotton, whatever, a braid is a design.

I'm not an expert but I think that "extensions" is kind of a generic term. Hair extensions can be sewn, braided, clipped or glued. It's taking human or synthetic hair to add volume or length.
Braiding is taking hair and twisting it into braids. If you see a woman (or man) of any race with a hair full of braids they have hair added in. There's just not enough hair on a human head to make it look full enough. Especially when it's longer. I'm not talking about cornrows or something like that where the style is to leave those gaps between each braid.

I'm talking real world, not literal definitions. Essentially no adult woman gets braids just using her own hair.

Are we confusing the term "braids" (which I have always interpreted to be the braided hairstyle, whether it be the person's own hair, or a braided extension) and "extensions" - which are popular in the community with both males and females?
Obviously, males and females of all races can be seen wearing a braided hairstyle. A significant portion of them are extensions. I don't think she was sent home because she wore her hair braided. Whether I agree with it or not, their argument is that these extensions she is wearing do not present a natural appearance and can be distracting to other students - akin to telling someone they cannot wear a Ronald Reagan mask around the school or a big giant Cat in the Hat-style hat.
Not that they think braids are trashy, in and of themselves. At least from where I sit, that appears to be the case. Yes it is a judgment call, but at a certain point, we may have to use a little common sense.
Let's take some examples:

I'm trying to be reasonable. I'm not trying to tell people what to do with their own hair, but dammit school is school. We start futzing around with this shite - it's like the purple/green/blue hair craze. "Just say no."

I don't have a problem with her being sent home. It's over the top.
Regarding those photos, my guess is that every braid in those photos has hair added in. Except for the guy. He doesn't have braids, he has the white version of dreadlocks.
