I agree. What I will say is that a school would have been more reluctant to send a sister home with the identical hairstyle - maybe they ultimately would have, anyway, but they would have agonized over it I'm sure. The sensitivity can be a good thing, but it can also result in disparate treatment.

Regarding those photos, my guess is that every braid in those photos has hair added in.

I don't disagree with that.

quote:

Except for the guy. He doesn't have braids, he has the white version of dreadlocks.

But dreds are a form of braided hairstyle - they work the hair to form separate cords of hair - that is the very definition of "braids" whether hair is added in or not. I mean, gals "with that good hair" can grow it long enough to work into braids - a lot of times extensions are added either because she can't or the hair isn't long enough to do what she wants. But, if a school can make young men take their hats off inside, they can make everyone (or they ought to) maintain a hair standard that is not unsafe or distracting to others.

Just my $0.02 - I'm probably being a facist again.

And as for the history of all this - they found "dreadlocks" in Crete (Minoan - same origin as the Minotaur, culturally) and ancient Egypt. However, in what was likely parallel or "universal" in origin, they were also noted in pre-Columbian American culture and in Asia. The Maasai wear dreds traditionally dyed red. Some children in Nigeria (the Dada) are born with naturally matted hair. For all we know, that's where the hairstyle originated.

The traditional depiction of the biblical figure Samson is with dreadlocks.

So, while contemporary wearing of elaborate braids and other hairstyles with extensions may be associated with those of African ancestry, it certainly seems to be a universal style (at the very least style, perhaps adding hair in is a relatively new phenomenon - at least a widespread one, as technology and costs have made it more accessible to a wider consumer base).

Dreads aren't "braided" though. Actually some are, but mostly they aren't. Whether hair is added in or not the hair hair has to be braided for there to be "braids".

I guess anyone can wear dreads, but African hair is the most conducive to locking. If hair is straight, fine, and oily it's not conducive to locking. I'm sure that white guy went to extremes and you can see his hair isn't really locked even then. If he washes it - and he really should - it'll probably come apart.

We're getting into semantics, largely, here, but we're not really in disagreement.

Right - dreadlocks are generally matted (although some are braided as we both agree) - for that matter, I think the current fashion - initially popular with sisters, but spread to other groups - of elaborate braided extensions are - I'm 50, so I've seen this evolution - a combination of dreadlocks and cornrows. Maybe I'm missing a step, but that's how I see it.

Obviously, a number of brothers are now wearing significant extensions as well, braided or not - you can see it every Saturday and Sunday afternoon during the fall on the television if nothing else.

This is also true. The whole concept that specifically dreds are "dirty" comes primarily from white folks who have to compensate for a natural straightness to get the hair to mat in the first place. Traditional braiding is probably better on straighter hair, while dreds require a certain "kinkiness" (your term) or, dare I say "nappiness" (if that term is not too offensive in 2016) to achieve an aesthetically pleasing lock.

The problem is folks want what they don't have. White folks want more curly/kinky to their hair. Black folks (generally) want more straight length to work with.

I was fine with the 1960s and 1970s when most black folks abandoned efforts to straighten their hair with heat and chemicals (thoroughly damaging their hair and scalps) and went largely with relatively neat, efficient naturals - although some *cough* Angela Davis *cough* took things a little far. The problems with the natural is that it did not allow for individual expression in the same manner as, particularly white women have such a myriad of hairstyle choices (again, depending on her individual hair texture and volume).

white people's hair can be "dreaded" quite easily.

Yes AA will happen a lot easier naturally , but white people can do it naturally or just go to "Mo Hair" down on gardere.

They'll get you straight.....or should I say matted..

I have a very simple question.

Do black people who get their hair straightened or dyed blonde get sent home as well?

Or is this just yet another perfect example of the double standard of white privilege? (minority privilege is empirically provable)

I've got no problem with this. I don't expect many on here to sympathize, but just imagine if a group of people ripped you from your home country and enslaved you, then had the gall to rob you of your culture as well. A lot of people are pushing for culture theft to become a hate crime and I can't say I disagree. Especially in cases like this where this father is clearly a racist

Honestly,

would they be better off if they had not "been ripped from their home country?"

Not one person alive owned slaves in the USA. Not a single human being. Also, not a single human being has a great great great great relative who was a slave. Not one. Slavery was multiple generations ago.....

Slavery ended over 150 years ago. There have been numerous terrible events that have happened since then. Outright genocide. Pure TORTURE -- Experiments -- just to be evil. EVIL. Look what the Japanese did to the Chinese. Look what the Nazis did to the Jews?

THESE ARE RECENT EVENTS --- THERE ARE STILL SURVIVORS OF THESE TRAGEDIES AND MANY 1ST GENERATIONS SURVIVORS.

Nobody talks about this. Nobody cares about this. Why you ask? Simple, those demographics who suffered these horrible fates --- do not hold on to the past. They do not ask for reparations, or revenge, or special treatment disguised as equality.

and because of this --- they succeed.

Do other races really want to play the cultural appropriation game with the white race? How fricking asinine.

Well I disagree. You can go on google and see that there's a whole process just to get white people hair to mat and have the appearance of dreadlocks. But it never really locks so I consider it a white version and not the real thing. And because it doesn't lock they can't practice normal hair washing hygiene or it will go back to normal pretty quickly. Again I'm not an expert but I see what their hair looks like whenever I'm near a drum circle.

Huh? Braids have likely been around for most of human history. Human history started in Africa.

In any event who started these types of braids? It had to be African people from either the US, West Indies, or Africa.

The first evidence of them in Africa is about 1500 years after they appeared in Mesopotamia.

The West Indies is where they've been most popular in modern times.

Both, actually. I don't doubt that they are most popular now among people of African descent, but I don't believe in cultural appropriation as a mechanism for anything other than the natural intermingling of human cultures as the world becomes more connected.

I particularly don't believe in cultural appropriation as an attack point if the cultural item in question had been originally appropriated from another.

Honestly the Middle Eastern cultures get little credit for their massive achievements, largely because the rise of modern Islam crushed their intellectual advancement for many centuries. The misuse of various religions has been a terrible thing for humans, but that's a topic for another thread.

Never saw it growing up in Glen Oaks, nor any of the predominantly black schools I attended.

Even the rants and indignation regarding cultural appropriation seem to come almost EXCLUSIVELY from a white. . .usually women. It is so rare when a black rants about cultural appropriation, that it goes viral.
