It sucks. Just really really really poor timing.
I have a hard time believing they were seriously going to pull the lever for a Republican. I think that ultimately this will only galvanize each base and have somewhat minimal effect in the long run. Abortion may be important to some, but for most people, especially those in the middle, seeing their dollar lose more and more value every day and watching public schools push insane sexuality and pronouns on their kids are far bigger dinner table issues.

They may have. Gas prices and inflation are palpable. It was easy to see and for them to say well maybe the other side can do better.
But their whole life they have been told that abortion and Roe is the most important thing to a woman. It’s Reeeeeeeeee Essential human right!

I think it will probably be less of a "winning issue" for the Democratic party in states like Louisiana in which birth control and things like Plan B are still explicitly legal and in which the penalties are exclusively against the service provider. Any state that passes/tries to pass legislation that looks like the bill that was proposed and failed in Louisiana this past session which criminalized for the woman both Plan B and some forms of birth control (by defining pregnancy at at the moment of fertilization and any action that "ends" the "pregnancy" beyond that point a criminal abortion) will find itself in a political shitstorm that is fully sustainable, in my opinion.

Like I said, the likelihood of people like that voting R in any meaningful numbers are negligent at best. For most independent voters, especially now, this issue ranks pretty low on the list of priorities.

It’s such a polarized topic, most people already have their minds made up on it. People already knew most Republicans are against abortion. That’s not some shock. Abortion and gun control are some of the few topics people know what each party’s views are. The ones who view it as such an important topic that they’d vote based on it, would have never voted Republican anyway because they feared this happening.
