My dad is adopted and was told his whole life he had native American ancestry, did a 23& Me and it said he's like 80% English, no native at all, Cajun and 2% Nigerian

I've got the most English name ever produced. Dates back to 1066. Hell, my daughter's (no pics) first and second name are former Queens of England. My people ruled the Earth!

My paternal surname ancestor was from Argyleshire, Scotland and arrived as an indentured servant in 1651.

Maternal earliest arriving ancestor was Dutch and arrived in Charleston, SC in 1680s.

Crazy thing about human history is that people didn’t just stay put in their own little areas, we started moving around and fricking each other before just the last couple hundred years. Crazy, right?

Also, any ideas as to why this is a thing?

Germans arrived later and can be better identified. My great grandmother was German and she's the only one we have identifiable origin for- based on ancestry results, though, it appears literally every other ancestor I have was British

I’ve done both tests. 23andMe is more accurate in showing 26.4% French & German and links me to Germany (North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse) as ‘Possible.’ My mom’s from Ohio and the Germanic I show on AncestryDNA is 11% and the chromosome painter shows it all comes from her side.

The earliest lines I can trace back to Germany are 4x grandparents on her side.

The rest of me is good ole’ old stock American though… I got the Scotland and Northern Ireland genetic community as ‘Highly Likely’ on the January 2023 23andMe update. (Along with England and Wales each as ‘Likely.’)

British is the “default” and seen as boring so people latch onto something else.

A creole is a person of mixed Spanish and French heritage. It was linked to money and power in most cases. The creoles were the people who looked down and often discriminated against the Cajuns.

The definition of a “creole” over time has been bastardized also. Lots of people today that claim to be creole aren’t really “creole” either

(Spain not Mexico, Central America, Caribbean or South America)
