Hang on now, I gave the guys in nebraska credit.

Any farm boys should know how to cook for a large group.

I knew this thread would turn into a giant circle jerk at some point.

In my family the men do the majority of the cooking. Great cooks abound. I don't think you see that much elsewhere.

I probably do 2/3 of the cooking between me and my GF.

I simply listed some indisputable facts.

Good food doesn't have to be spicy hot, but it has to have flavor. That's one thing most folks here in La understand and do well.

Amen, don't go to the Midwest and expect good food. It is very bland. They give a good cut of meat, cook it correctly, but they don't season it at all.

If you season your steak with anything but salt and butter, you may need to leave this discussion.

Where men do the majority of the cooking? I'd say in the past decade that men across this country have realized that dating/marry someone with decent cooking skills isn't a for sure thing.

Now with older generations, I think it's completely different.

Not sure of an answer. ~ With the responses/comments I see on the Food & Drink Board, it's darn sure not Louisiana!

I spent some time working in middle of nowhere Mississippi for several months. They would always rave about certain "Catfish Houses" where the fried catfish was supposed to be amazing. Each little town had one they were proud of. None of them were bad, but it was absolutely nothing special. That's all they ate.....fried catfish and BBQ (which was just meat with store bought sauce).

Then around Thanksgiving, they asked if we wanted to cook a Gumbo for the office one day (since there were several of us from LA who were heading home for the holidays). I spent the morning cooking instead of working and when the facility manager took the first bite, he just went "daaaammmmnnnn" in that slow Mississippi accent. You could tell he did not expect some 20-somthing year old guys to be able to cook like that. We had guys from all over the country there and each one questioned how we knew how to cook like that. Hell, I learned to make a roux when I was like 10.

I know Louisiana isn't the only place like that and there very well may be better places. But for the most part, there are not many places where there are so many dishes considered to be for the "man" to make. Most places consider grilling and BBQ to be the man's responsibility. LA just considers a lot more.

while there are good cooks elsewhere in the USA, i would be willing to bet that your average meal in a home in the south has more flavor than your average meal anywhere else in the USA especially the north, up north doesn't embrace food as part of their culture

I also put pepper on it with my salt. This steak had NOTHING on it.

I know Louisiana is the only state where a group of guys will start drinking at 7:00 am, and "the best way to make a roux" is a possible conversation.

What the frick is wrong with that?

Nothing's wrong with it. I think it's awesome. It's just an example of why I think top-to-bottom, men in Louisiana could be better cooks than guys in other states.

I think a disproportionate amount of Louisiana men know how to cook for very large groups.

Not a lot of home cooks can bust out 600lbs of food while crushing a case of beer.

That's the best description of Louisiana cooking ever heard. It makes me miss T-Bois Fest
