Mentioning Avon remind me of one of the best jobs I had in high school. My buddy and I were paid to pick up boxes of Avon and distribute it to the "Avon Ladies" so they could fill their orders to their clients.

We would do McDonald's breakfast, head to the distribution center dock, get his old Silverado loaded to the hilt and we would strike out. This was early morning, and it would never fail that one or more of these women would answer the door still half naked, in skimpy PJS, or with a robe falling off of them. It was not uncommon for them to invite us in and offer us a coke or ice tea or snack....and yes, a couple times "Mrs. Robinson" tried to seduce us (at least that was our perception) - - but unlike the 15 yr old horn-dogs that are bouncing all over these 23 year old English teachers these days - - my buddy and I ran like scared rabbits.

Buddy of mine's dad got into Shaklee. He had all of their household cleaning products and also stuff like mouthwash, vitamins, etc. He tried talking my parents into buying from him and my dad told him to get bent.

My childhood considered of Amway-branded... Everything

My parents got roped into it by a neighbor in the mid '90s. I was a young adolescent at the time, and was not too fond of these new "events" that starting taking up our family's time.

- Weekly product pickups
- Parents seemed like they had to go to at least 1 (maybe 2?) weekly "Night Owl" meetings to discuss strategies on how to sell
- Big boring conferences in Houston where I was stuck in a hotel all weekend. It wasn't terrible, but you run out of stuff to do fast.
- Get togethers with other Amway families
- Car rides to anywhere involved listening to all the tapes of other "Diamond" Amway sellers who had "made it" and were ranting about how you can do the same.

For a while, I sort of resented my parents for being in Amway. Even as a young man, 11-14 years old, it all felt like a load of bullshite to me. Plus, it isolated my parents from friends and even some family, as they didn't want to be around people who were constantly trying to sell them shite. I totally understand why those people distanced themselves now, since as an adult, I've had family into MLM schemes and it is all they talk about. I don't want to be around them...

Once Amway moved to more internet sales and sort of rebranded to "Quickstar" in the late 90's, my parents seemed to either have lost interest or just had wizened up, thank God! I don't really resent them any more and am more understanding as an adult. They were just trying to find a way to make some extra money for our family and were sold on an idea that made sense to them, but didn't have the luxury of the internet as we know it today to figure out that it really doesn't work.

I had a much older cousin who got sucked into the Amway scheme. Must of been in the early 90's. I remember he and his wife coming to our house and did a Amway presentation, trying to get my folks to sign on. My folks didn't bite, but did buy a couple of things as a consolation prize. I remember seeing Amway dental floss and toothpaste in the house.

My folks bought Funk & Wagnalls encyclopedias and yearbooks. I used them a lot, but we also had access to good libraries, so it just made things more convenient.

My uncle was tricked by the asphalt gypsies. There should be extra penalties for those preying on the elderly.

My family did the Avon shite for a while. I remember going to my grandparents' house and hearing my grandma telling my dad "can you stop bring that shite over here". We stopped getting the cases for awhile. Funniest part to me was it was for household cleaning products, but we had a family friend that brought her own shite to clean our house.

Parents also got suckered into an off-property Disney timeshare (Weston?). If we ever bring it up, my dad will double down and talk about how much they save to go to Orlando every other year just to avoid going to Disney.

I have some of my Mom's and they are still in great shape. She still has a lot of hers that are used regularly when we cook at her house. At least they were made to hold up!

World Book Encyclopedia. Lots of heated exchanges between my parents over this one but we have the full set and somehow subscribed to the yearly yearbook. I can't imagine how much that cost us over the years.

I read every page in every book. Twice. The yearbooks and Special reports also. There was one on the Warren Commission, the NASA Programs etc.

My Mom and I would read at night. The rest of the family watched TV.

I saw a Cutco booth in Costco this past weekend. Avoided eye contact with the woman running it, and hurried past.

When the schwan man came around in his yellowish truck selling tv dinners and other stuff.

Me and a bunch of friends did the Columbia house tape deals. We probably still owe them but we built up our music collection filled up 5 of those cassette tape holders that held about 30ish in each one.

I was very close on buying a rainbow vacuum after a guy came to our house and gave us a presentation. Long time ago, I declined after he asked me three times for my wife and I to also go to presentation a month later where we would get a free gift.

Grandpa got scammed by some house painting gypsies in the early 90's. Painted exterior of his house for a reasonable price but several weeks later it rained and half the paint ran off the damn walls. He waited for them to come back through town but it never happened.
