Monroe and S'port consistently rank highly in the murder stats but there aren't any neighborhoods that I really find scary. The hood has lots of people to blend into. A stranger, even a white stranger, doesn't stand out that much. Of course looking scared will draw some attention.
Some backwoods areas might see less than a handful of strangers a year. A belligerent curiosity is kind of natural. You might even find some belligerent assistance if you need it.

Probably not venturing into backwoods anything much less somewhere like the bottoms or ghost town

Without a doubt, backwoods. The hood, you won’t get bothered. You walk through the hood 9 times out of 10 you’ll be left alone. A couple of reasons for this; one, they will think that you’re a customer just looking for a hit. Two, one big reason the natives leave you alone is that they don’t want the heat on them or on their block which stops their business.
I’ve always felt out of place being in the backwoods. To me there is more of a chance being fricked with out there than in the city/hood. But it comes down to where you’ve grown up. And what you feel more comfortable with.

Most of the murders in the "murder capitals" are drug deals gone bad, robberies of drug heads flashing money or revenge killings. Watch First 48. Few of these murders are innocent people of any color walking down the wrong street.

Backwoods area with meth trailers. They can kill you and you might not ever be found again.

In the backwoods you're dealing with poor white trash, going nowhere fast in life, getting fricked up on who the frick knows what (white people, amiright?) and always looking for a fight. My wife is from a town that is full of these people, including some relatives, and they're not good people to be around when they're fricked up.
In the hood you're dealing with territorial militants and drug addicts. The drug addicts in the hood aren't nearly as aggressive as those out in the backwoods. The gangsters? Yeah, not trying to frick with them, BUT, in theory, white people in the hood aren't exactly a threat. They're usually customers buying drugs, maybe going to a restaurant, or lost. The gang folks have no reason to frick with them and, as mentioned, killing a white person in the hood is just asking for all hell to rain down from the police.
I'd rather grab lunch in the hood than go to a bonfire with a bunch of white trash junkies.

If something pops off, there is a good chance no one will call the police.. And if you get seriously injured/shot or something, if the police are called then it takes them longer to get out there.
