So it is enrollment time and I am trying to decide what company to go with. My options are UnitedHC, ETNA, BCBS, and Cigna.

So this yr I had United and they wouldnt cover surgery to fix my nose. I broke it when I was young and have broken it a couple times since then. I pretty much cant breath through it at all, 70% or more restricted. I have always heard good things about BCBS but was wondering what info the great minds of the OT had to offer. Any recommendations on which of those companies are mot likely to cover the surgery?

TIA

BCBS is probably your best bet if you're in Louisiana.

BCBS has never denied me for anything that I’ve needed (here in LA).

However, you might have a hard time getting any insurance company to pay for a surgery for an old injury like your nose.

Your best bet it to have a friend hit you in the face with a cricket bat, claim you wrecked while cycling, then the insurance will cover the damage.

If your doctor cant get insurance to cover it you need a new doctor.

Insurance probably thinks it is cosmetic surgery, get the doctor to appeal it as a medical necessity

Its not insurance if you are buying it specifically to get surgery

This is why our healthcare system is screwed

Most insurances should cover that surgery as long as your surgeon is coding it appropriately with the correct icd 10 codes and cpt codes.

ding ding ding, BINGO. It has nothing at all due to insurance, its because he way its being coded is not coming across and medically nessesary, or its not medically nessesary at all. Just because you " want" surgery dont mean insurance will cover it. You need to look at your explination of benefits and see what insurance you signed up for in the first place.

We have BCBS PPO Louisiana and I am extremely impressed/happy with them. I was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer last year. In a year of chemo, radiation, surgery and more chemo nothing was ever denied. It was such a blessing to not have to fight with an insurance company while feeling like crap. I heard many insurance horror stories from other cancer patients, I was very lucky to have BCBS.

If you've ever been covered by BCBS, and then had coverage with someone else, this isn't really a question. BCBS, for all it's faults, is far better than the other companies in the market.
