Detroit gets my vote...it gets a bad rap for a good reason BUT downtown is improving....good sports teams: Red Wings, Lions, & Tigers...,the Burbs are really nice like Royal Oak, St Claire Shores & Auburn Hills plus great prestigious hoods like Grosse Pointe. Across river from Canada, Michigan is a really pretty state, especially the U.P.

I can see that some of you have never been to Detroit. There is no contest.
Eta: I'm pretty sure you can't choose auburn hills, farmington hills, or anything like that. Some parts of Detroit are growing, but far more are terrifying. Also the up is really more Wisconsin than anything else...Also frick the winter

One thing to keep in mind- most of the best places in the UP are like an eight hour drive from Detroit. All the nice places in the lower peninsula are about five hours away.

This is a good debate. I've been to both lots for work. I would probably go with Detroit.

Good point on the distances to UP and Lake Michigan.
I have lived in the burbs of both cities and spent time in the ghetto/barrio of both cities. They are pretty evenly matched.
Suburbs: Detroit > El Paso
Safety in center city: El Paso > Detroit
Crossing the bridge to party: Juarez > Windsor
Crossing the bridge and stay alive: Windsor > Juarez
Economy: El Paso > Detroit
Locals: Midwesterners > Texans
Women: Senoritas > Gringas
Food: Tacos > Big Boy
Region: Southwest > Midwest
Weather: El Paso > Detroit
Quick flights: TX/AZ/NV/CO/UT/SoCal > Chicago/Midwest/Canada/NYC
If I was married with kids I'd probably take Detroit suburbs, if I was single and mobile I'd take El Paso for a few years.
