We lived in Dallas but we were in Asheville, NC, to celebrate my 60th birthday. As with many people we had to drive our rent car from Asheville to Dallas.

uh, no
That according to my uncle who was an FAA aircraft accident investigator. That was a sound I heard with my own ears.

I believe that but the planes were not decelerating and the engines weren't at idle
ETA: fan blades don't really "rattle" either

In Jackson Wyoming. It was our last day of an incredible vacation in the Yellowstone/Tetons area. Needless to say we did not get on our flight home that day. We drove to Idaho Falls to return our rent a car. We were stranded there for two days waiting to get on a flight back to Baton Rouge. On the third day we were able to get another rent a car, none were available until then. We drove a little over 2000 miles to the BR airport, got our car then home to Denham Springs. I’ve never been so happy to get home in my life.

Sitting in the fourth floor of Middleton Library studying for a calculus exam. No iPhone, no laptop back then. I didn’t even know what happened until I got to class and my professor cancelled the test and told us.

I had started with a manufacturing company within the month.
A friend of mine called to tell me what happened, and I turned a TV on in the office in time to see the second plane hit.
Nobody knew what to think. But this was in rural south, nobody quit working.
Just a few months earlier, I was at a conference in NYC with my previous job and had stayed at the Millennium. My boss' brother worked at the AMEX building and lived next door, they saw crazy stuff like your friend saw. I was back up there in that office a year or so after it happened, and it was unbelievable looking down into that hole...

The plane was certainly descending which would effect speed, but how could the fans rattling be the only noise. There was none of the usual engine whining sound at all which is why I thought it was a commuter plane in trouble. I was on the 11th floor 12 blocks above the WTC so it was already very low and practically over my building.

At an office on one of the upper floors of the Lakeway Center on Causeway Boulevard in Metairie. Watching on an old grainy television.
After a while the fire alarm went off and everyone high tailed it for the exits.
A crowd of people was waiting for the elevator. I told them that they could wait for that elevator if they wanted to but I was going down about 11 flights of stairs. When I turned around, everyone was following me.

In the Army stationed in Germany. I was driving on B9 from Dexheim to Wiesbaden, Germany. I had to do more out processing so I could move back to the States on the 21st. Listening to AFN radio when the first plane hit.

I remember that but I was referring to an old LSU message board. I guess it's still around.
