I was at Walmart. I noticed that instead of playing music they switched to an audio feed of a news channel on the PA. Eventually they got the TVs to simulcast a network on their internal Walmart Store Channel. After, I believe, they contracted with ABC to produce news updates on their store network. These were the old picture tube TV’s. They looked like this.

They used tube TV’s until LCD’s become lower in price. I think by the end of the 2000’s they ditched the network since no one was watching or paying attention to what was on them.

But back to 9/11, it was a normal day, but as the news spread, the store emptied out as people stayed home.

In bed sleeping between night shifts. My mom called which was weird since she knew I was sleeping. We turned on the news and watched until I HAD to sleep.

Driving up 59 in Houston past Bush Airport and seeing no planes cross over was creepy. Was a clear evening. Usually can see about three planes back lining up for landing.

at Broadmoor Middle School in Shreveport

My 3rd hour computer teacher's in-law worked in the WTC. When we got to her class, she had the TV on and was on-and-off the phone with her husband, trying to see if the relative was safe. As I was walking in, she announced to the class that "terrorists [had] attacked the World Trade Center." I remember thinking, "What's a terrorist, and what's the World Trade Center?"

We sat and watched the news for the rest of the class, watching the towers fall on loop, everyone just sort of quiet. The in-law eventually got in touch to say she had made it out. By the start of 4th period, the rest of the school knew.

Because it's Broadmoor, in the otherwise silent halls between classes that day, there were black kids yelling stuff like, "We going to war, n!gga," and, "USA in this bitch!"

Levity, and evidence of Americans' tendency to unite when it's time to whip some arse

I was 21, my mom and I had just returned from the vet, we had to put one of our dogs down. We came home, and turned on Regis and Kelly, saw the planes hitting live. Then I drove to my fraternity house, and en route I had passed up one of my fraternity brothers driving like a mad man. I get to the house, everyone is watching it on TV. I say, hey I just saw so and so driving like a crazy person in town, come to find out, his dad was in the towers that day.

At work. Doing a takeoff for an upcoming bid.
Mrs M called me that something was going on in NYC. I put the conference room television on in time to see the second aircraft hit the second tower.

My oldest son was on his first Westpac deployment and I remember thinking he was probably going to war.

Anchored off Southern Coast of France on a sailboat. Didn’t know for 2 days. As soon as we walked in the bar at the Marina in Fre’jus the bartender immediately changed the TV to English CNN.

I was at home in the middle of the woods in NWLA. Had just gotten a shower after breakfast. Spent the rest of the day watching and reading the internet.

France. Vacation with the wife. We were out riding bikes in the Loire Valley countryside.

Came back to the little boutique hotel and the French people that worked there took us aside and showed us the attack that was on a loop on CNN International in the bar. They were all compassionate.

Just so happened the next day we were touring Normandy. It was the most somber moment of my life so far, standing there and looking at all the hundreds of graves of American soldiers knowing what just happened to all those innocent people 5,000 miles away.

Jury duty in downtown Shreveport. When they flew Bush to barksdale AFB, they had snipers on the roof of buildings. I left home when first plane struck but didn't know about the second plane until they sequestered us.

In my apartment in Oakland. In the following days, some of my fellow bus commuters wore clothing signifying their military service-First Cav, USMC, etc.
