I find this discussion interesting. Without work, you can't take care of the others.
Without family, why care about the others.
If you live in a craphole where no one cares about anything, I guess there is nothing to say but sit at the mailbox and wait.

I love my job. But work is work. If it prevents me from having the best possible relationship with my family, then I need to find better "work."

If your priority isn't yourself, you're doing it wrong.

Don't get married and have kids, work to live, and live life doing what you want. It's how I roll.

It's dynamic, not static. There's no fixed percentage, just putting the attention where/when it's needed most.

Work

My wife and I and all of our closest friends work stupid hours, and it sucks. It has to be done though and we make enough to where we can have fun together and live life. I'm definitely on the side of making the most of our time on this earth over trying to work my whole life.

In this example work is still the most important thing.

Without work, you can't live. Everything else is only possible if you are alive.

Animals can't do anything else unless they eat and drink.

Staying alive is always first, and that means working,

We need to take Fred out and get him hammered
Sounds like our boy is heading towards a midlife crisis

I am worried he is about to trade in the F250 for a Vette

At 48 yes I have, sorry my happy life isn't the same as yours, neither is wrong, and I am sorry you can't understand that.

In our society, yea.

It's all about money for us. We're all the same people, but we're divided by how much money we make.

And for most of us, the amount of money we make is directly proportional to how much work we put in. So to be at the top and make it to where your family doesn't have a need unfulfilled, you have to be away from them.

we should all be able to enjoy the years we do have here. Could be anywhere from 30 to 100. We could die tomorrow with our last thought being about whatever project or deadline is stressing us out.

But we can't, so there has to be a balance. And for me, the scale is tipped heavily towards family.

I like you as a poster and supa's mindset, yet:

I AGREE. If you put yourself first, your family will prosper. Can you not understand this most basic thinking? When one puts himself first, his family also partakes in the pursuits of his labors.

The way I look at it, if you aren't happy with yourself, no matter what you have or can buy or do; you will be miserable.

Put your happiness first. Put your life first.

Although I guess that changes when you have a family.

And I'm miserable Ohhhh the irony.
