IMO, the best middle class place to live in metro NOLA (south of lake) is old Gretna. Old Gretna is very low crime. Police response times are just a few minutes on "routine" calls and 1-2 minutes on "hot" calls (contrast that to New Orleans where they may not respond same day on a vehicle burglary). The architecture is that of classic New Orleans, but you can safely walk the streets at night. There is some nightlife, a farmers market, and art walks. There is a safe bicycle/jogging path on top of the levee (and the Gretna police patrol it regularly on 4-wheelers). In the fall there are free concerts on the batture by HPL Ave (where they've built stadium seating into the levee. You can walk to the Gretna Heritage Fest. They also show kids movies at the river on a big inflatable screen periodically. It is 10 minutes from downtown (bridge traffic can be an issue though). Home prices there have rapidly climbed in recent years.

I live in the Irish Channel off magazine. Love it.

Lakeview is where most female LSU grads reside.

If not that, then Uptown.

People have been getting robbed in broad daylight in south market just in the last two weeks or so. Children are being abducted in uptown just last week. The crime is creeping into the nice neighborhoods (mostly carjackings and armed robberies) because it seems like the Mayor and DA are basically not doing anything about it.

I'm around her age (if she's just out of college) and my girlfriend and I are getting out as soon as she graduates from college here. The crime is just too much.

Uptown is probably the best bet though. The warehouse district at night just doesn't seem like a great idea at least until things really rebound from COVID. It seems like the depression in tourism is making the downtown area as unsafe as its been since I've lived here the last 3 years.

Depends on what she wants to do entertainment-wise. If you want a nice safe (relatively) neighborhood and still very easy commuting access to both the city and I-10, I would suggest to escape from NOLA itself on Metairie Road right over the Jefferson line. Don't have to deal with the idiocy of NOLA. Some of the older homes in the area from the line to Bonnabel are doubles or have spacious apartments attached/within. Preferable to Lakeview IMO.

I live right on the Prytania business corridor. I've lived at my place for three years and the only thing of note crime wise was the shoot out that involved two guys from Baltimore trying to rob the CVS.

It's a great place to live. I can walk in less than two minutes to two bakeries, a grocery store, two gyms, a neighborhood bar, dry cleaners, library, pharmacy, three bank branches, ice cream shop, yogurt shop, a wine store, a yoga studio, pharmacy and four pretty damn good restaurants. My truck doesn't move some weekends.

Must be places available in Warehouse. Likely Cotton Mill due to empty short term rentals

Where is her office going to be located? Will she be working in the CBD?

I seriously doubt a 25 year old has any interest in living in LaPlace or Gretna

Mentioning those two places as similar tells me you don't know the first thing about the city.

Perhaps not, but you can get to the CBD from Old Gretna quicker than you can get there from uptown (closer to the Universities). BTW, I didn't say Gretna, I said Old Gretna - big difference.

Mid City is insanely hit or miss.

Some AMAZING places there... blocks away from complete ghetto.

I lived in Carrollton next to Panola St Cafe as a young professional. Had one side of a shotgun. Safe is a relative term in that city. I considered my street somewhat safe. We didn't have a lot of homicides, but I also didn't walk down the street without looking over my shoulder every so often, especially at night. Muggings of Tulane kids in our neighborhood was pretty common. My next door neighbors were once forced inside, tied up, and then robbed. They also sold drugs, so who knows.

My neighborhood. Love it. Feel safe. But I am a male and have plenty of street smarts. Don’t live Shark Lyfe either.

Old Metairie has well priced rentals in some areas.

The difference between Lakeview and old metairie is twofold: Old Metairie is much nicer and has jefferson parish police depth, not NOPD.

If she wants to have fun, the LGD is nice and in the middle of all the good bars in uptown and the warehouse district.

I would look for something in quasi-Old Metairie. Like, start at the intersection of Oaklawn and Veterans and make a circle with a 2 mile radius. That's really the only part of the New Orleans metro I'd live in right now. You are close to Lakeview there, close to Mid City (relatively), and close to UNO.

What you're after depends on money. Maybe you can afford a single-family home. Maybe you settle for a duplex. There are all sorts of rentals available in that area.

Not Lakeview, that's a place for families who want a New Orleans zip code, but a Metairie lifestyle.

This is all you need to know. If you are still searching try mid city.

Pay high rent for a year, live it up, get to know the neighborhood and build a network.

She’s an attorney she can afford it.
