If she wants to live in New Orleans, she should live where she can experience the lifestyle she is seeking while being relatively safe for urban living. Lakeview will be a bit boring for a 25-30 single person. I'd look at Mid-City near City Park and a few blocks on either side of Bayou St. John between Carrollton and American Can Co area. Uptown would be good if she can afford it. Parts of Lower Garden District and Irish Channel are good. There are lots of rentals around Tulane and Loyola in University area, but I do consider those areas a little more unsafe and she may not want to be around that many college kids. If she wants a condo or apt there are some new ones that have gone up near the Lafitte Greenway in Mid City on Bienville. When she finds something she likes have her check the nearby crime statistics by address.

Lakeview is probably her best option from a safety standpoint.

More well to do than what? Surely not Uptown

Are you cherry picking the parts of uptown which don't look like a third world country when you say this?

Lakeview is a solid choice, safest bet really. Uptown has nicer areas but they are hood adjacent. Downtown / mid-city aren't places you would want her to live outside of on-site parking, gated apartments.

Plenty streets in Lakeview wish they were in 3rd world condition

The answer for OP is WHD. Lakeview is far enough away that you may as well be in Old Metairie since you'll be driving to most things regardless and you'll actually be safe at home.

You want west of City Park and North of I-610. Some decent restaurants and stuff on Harrison so she won't have to travel too far for a good meal. Some good places right over the canal in Metairie as well.

Mandeville or Metairie

Rant [on]

I hate this answer in these type of threads. No 20 something wants to live in sterile suburbs. On top of that the commute across the Causeway from Mandeville to the CBD would suck arse on a good day. Not everyone is scared to death that a few lower class people may be living in the house next door. They have huge swaths of the city that you can check the NOPD crime map and have little to no crimes over a 6 month period (outside of things like DUI).

Give the person some real answers or don't post. Uptown, Midcity, Lakeview, Carrollton and the Warehouse District are all good options depending on what you want. Hell the Bywater and Marigny aren't even bad now if you have a little more tolerance for bullshite (which I don't, so I wouldn't recommend).

If I didn't just buy a house, I would have rented an apartment in Bucktown. It's a neighborhood in Metairie right over the border to New Orleans. It's right along the Lake. Great jogging paths, great restaurants, safe to go anywhere, and very close car ride to anywhere in New Orleans.

When the wife was in law school at Loyola, about 5 years ago, she lived on the corner of causeway & river road in old Jefferson. It wasn’t terrible. She was between elmwood and uptown and it was never really “unsafe”. Easy to drive/Uber anywhere. Would always have friends asking to park there as it was a convenient location.

If she wants to live in Orleans Parish, Lake Vista is the best. We have very little crime with consistent patrols by Levee Board cops. Quick access to mid city, downtown via Wisner, Canal St. There are a few rental homes out here which become available periodically.

It's a horrible answer, for all the reasons you listed.

I prefer a nice gated high-rise, but she prefers renting a house, possibly in Lakeview. She will have a roommate, so at least a 2BR/2BA. They can afford something nice

She's gonna want to live near all the other young professionals in the warehouse district, and that's honestly the safest place for her to be.

If she really wants to rent a house... have her rent something near Tulane.

Warehouse District is the best neighborhood in the city for a young single person. It's extremely safe (relative obviously) and close to things to do. I'd look as close to the Rouses on Baronne as possible.

My wife and I bought in Lakeview a couple years ago after living in the Warehouse District for years... It's one of the great regrets of my life.

somewhere it doesn't flood during an everyday rainstorm. Nothing worse than having to go park your car on ground bc it might rain.

if it has to be a house I'd say riverbend, Tulane area, or Lakeview. no where is safe and I would offer my daughter every penny I have for her not to live in New Orleans.

Breaking into vehicles? Yes. Anything beyond this is pretty rare. Especially compared to the rest of the city. It’s the safest area of the city. (This includes Lake Vista which is even safer but doesn’t have many rentals)

I live in Lakeview. There's a 3BR condo, very nice, behind my house for rent for $1600. Usually rented by dental hygiene students, but open now. (I'll miss them... )

My son is similar age. He looked at the Warehouse District, but to save money got a nice apt. in an old house in Mid-City near the intersection of Canal and Carrollton. He calls it the epicenter of the city--walking/biking distance to great bars/restaurants/City Park. On the street car line. Short car hop anywhere.
