When I was a kid my parents said that lost letters sometimes go to the South Pole on accident.

The 'lost' packages end up on ebay. If you find any items on ebay selling for a unreasonably low price, it is either a knock off, or an item stolen by a employee or postal worker.

Each of the bigger postoffices has preprinted envelopes and when they shred your mail to the point that it's only the front of the envelope, they'll put that shred in the special envelope and mail it to you.
You'll never know the adventures the rest of the envelope and the contents went through until they were so tortured that they gave up and fell apart.
