Being from Baton Rouge, I drive past Silver Nipple and Hollywood casinos to go to Island View.

If they have a buffet as good as Island View at the same price, I'm all for it. Slidell will be my new go to casino.

Let the people vote on it.

Period.

I live in Orleans Parish and don’t really care about casinos, but I really hate when parish governments won’t let the people decide.

They’re trying to change the names of the streets in Lakeview right now in New Orleans. It’s outrageous that they won’t let the PEOPLE who live on these streets or at least the neighborhood decide this.

Not morality, just common decency. Stop at most any gas station or convenience store in LA and there are gambling opportunities. Again, it's just trashy.

Louisiana can do better; must do better.

It's not just a casino. Actually, the casino portion is small compared to the rest of the development. It is a $300M+ project and the casino would account for a quarter of that.

As far as it passing, I don't know. The mayors of Slidell and the surrounding areas are against it.

thats what they always say but you always end up with just a shitty casino.

One last thought/question:

Can anyone share a St Tammany planning project that was well thought out in the last 10 years? I see a lot of traffic congestion and empty strip mall spaces. That’s a failure and makes me think this too will be not well done.

Any opposition doesn’t understand that if they vote no, the alternatives of what could be built there is much worse than a casino destination.

I did get a chuckle when driving out of Lakeshore a month or so ago, and a storage complex is being built between the Harbor Center and Lakeshore Estates. Not to mention the ever vacant Bayou Country.

Meh.

Selling bootleg CDs from a table in front of a gas station IS technically a “business interest” I guess.

Congrats on the “boost” then.
It's a very small piece of a seafood restaurant, but okay I guess.

If you are from Houston and want to gamble it is. That is the entire reason for the wild success of casinos in Lake Chuck. Yes, Lake Chuck casinos have been flying in Whales from the get go. A friend's son was in charge of taking care of them. He set up side trips like fishing and duck hunting for them

I'll take the casino as long as they have crab legs on the buffet and a concert/entertainment hall.

Ive been to the casinos in Mississippi several times for concerts and not gambling.

The most vocal objections seem to be the Mandeville/Abita Springs crowd. As it this will impact them in the least. They are anti anything other than bedroom community type services and businesses.

Explain please. What alternatives have been put on paper?

i won't do a good job of explaining anything but the zoning of that property is very unrestrictive. They can do multifamily shite hole apartments, section 8 type shite, the whole nine yards... It was a little while ago when i heard someone on wwl radio explaining it. Maybe even like a walmart or some shite if i remember correct.

This is a tough one

Pros
- The developer has committed upfront the 35M for the sports complex. I'd be nice to have a Pelican Park on this side of the parish.
- If they actually build the 5k seat arena we might get some good concerts and not have to drive to Hammond for HS graduations.
- 1000k jobs
- Tax Revenues
- Restaurants,Marina ,etc
- Flow over local economic impact

Cons
- More than likely they'll only build the Casino
- The corresponding influx of less than desirable people causing a spike in crime and even more trashiness.
- I assume most of the employees will live in Mississippi to avoid taxes
- Traffic
- Impact to property values
- There are zero plans to address the potential influx of new students in the school system.
- Impact to the Harbor center

Biggest Concern - The land is going to be developed either way. The plans are to build apartments on the property if the Casino fails. Does Slidell (and the Parish) want 100 acres of apartments?

The choice as I see things is a Casino with what i expect to be more negatives than positives or more apartments that we don't need and will begin to radically change the Parish.

Currently, I'm leaning towards taking the risk of the Casino. If our elected officials announce something other than more apartments, I"ll vote against.

That’s an empty promise. If the casino fails, the Parish is on the hook for the bond.

i support it for no other reason then it will force harrahs to shut down and go bankrupt

nobody wants to go to new orleans any more and if they lose harrahs they go broke and maybe then they might replace the destroya

I support it. However it should be a true entertainment venue Las Vegas style with big name shows and entertainment. But....that probably will not happen

Obviously this thread is intended for St Tammany baws, but posters from Shreveport and Baton Rouge feel free to comment on how Slidell is a drug infested shithole

I'm not from either of those cities and I think Slidell is a bit of a shithole.

Still I don't know why a casino in Slidell is a good idea. Not because it's a shithole, because it's next to a shithole with a casino and the MS gulf coast is comparatively much nicer. I mean if I want to go to a shithole with a casino, I'd go to New Orleans. At least there are other things to do in NOLA compared to Slidell.

I have no problem with it as long as the tax structure is adequate
