when you think of the south what is the first thing that comes to mind

Great food.... Then fatties (myself included).
Followed by.... The Gulf, The French Quarter, One round of golf per year in the summer where I am like "WTF this ain't worth it!", and friendly people.
Having traveled to the DR once and being around so many Euros it struck me how friendly Southern people are. If you pass someone here on the sidewalk and eye contact is made, the time appropriate "mornin'" or whatever is a must. At the very least the "man head nod" of acknowledgement. If not YOU are a dickhead or just crazy.
We have our faults, but we are pretty damned friendly.
