Wife and I went to Ireland when I graduated med school. I was making decent headway in planning the trip but was still a little overwhelmed. Stumbled upon a travel agency when googling Ireland vacation plans and never looked back. Didn't really cost me much more, got everything we wanted, and discovered towns that I would have never done on my own.

I used to take the family to Cancun when you could fly direct out of NO. Used an agent. It was nice having everything lined up when out of country - flight, hotel, connections, Mex travel info, and tour company contact based in the hotel. It was very comforting 1st time down.
Never used one in the states.

I haven't ever used one and been to Greece, Turkey, India, Spain and going to Thailand and Cambodia with a stopover in Shanghai next month.
I enjoy researching this stuff and learning how to navigate a place though so I spend lots of time on it and that's not for everyone.
I'll consider it if I ever totally frick up I suppose

I have used one for international travel...she travels abroad a lot and knew the area where I was going...

Every time I book a vacation with multiple families or friends going... I always say we should've just went to a travel agent.
It is a major whip in the arse coordinating everyone's flights cars etc...

First time, only time, last time... Our honeymoon. We were going to multiple cities, flying in/out of different countries. But most importantly, it was our honeymoon and I had enough shite to deal with without trying to plan it ourselves.

I have to use a travel agency for business travel. It seems pretty pointless.
We talked to a travel agent before our honeymoon to Italy, but we ended up planning it ourselves. I didn't really see a benefit of the travel agent. We had already researched plane ticket prices, and the prices that we were quoted from the travel agent were a few hundred dollars more than what we ultimately paid.

Been a while. But only advantages are personal attention, meaning the agent has been there or hears feedback from clients. Also payment. Only need to have 40% upfront. If planning ahead it makes the final check easier to stomach. And easier to work off.
That's really about it.

I am my own travel agent/ side business being the OT's travel agent. I do have to use the LSU travel agency for work flights though

Anyone saying they are cheaper has lost his or her mind. Travel agents are middlemen and they take a cut.
I haven't used one except for corporate travel with Amex which my company required.

I used one for our last Disney vacation. She booked everything including out meal reservations. Sent us all of our bands, paperwork, etc. in an organized folder that made the trip easier. She was great and didn't cost me a dime.

My wife, kids and I are using one for a trip to Spain this summer. Going to Running of the Bulls, etc. The Travel Agent has provided us with drivers, a balcony with bar overlooking the event etc. Don't like to travel in tour groups, so the travel agent arranged all of the advantages of a tour, without having to deal with someone else's schedule like on a tour. Gave us multiple options for accommodations. When we fact checked the costs ourselves, it was all very comparable to using a travel website yourself. I think they make money from kickbacks like Expedia and Kayak.

Didnt read the thread but my dad just got back from Fiji and Australia. He booked all of his travel by himself. But, he was talking to some other vacationers that had the same flights and accomdations and they used Costco to book. Comparing prices my dad said he could have saved a lot of money (my dad travels a lot and knows how to not get ripped off). He just told me this today and it got me thinking of looking into giving Costo a try for my next bookings.
